WXTU pumps it up

For the past few days, 92.5 WXTU's audio has been louder than I ever heard from them before. They used to be one of the "quieter" FM music stations in Philly, with a very bright high end, but now WXTU is just as loud as all the competition. Yet, the treble is still unusually crisp and I don't hear all the awful bass distortion that plagues most highly-processed FM stations.

I know WXTU is using an Omnia 6 audio processor (or at least they were a few months ago), so perhaps they've just updated it to the latest "6-EXi" version, which has some fancy new clipper design that Omnia claims "actually suppresses intermodulation distortion to deliver audio that's cleaner, clearer and more detailed than ever -- no matter how aggressive your processing".

You can thank XTU's estimable engineer named Don. He has a great ear and is plugged into technology, processing and overall "sound" of the station. Plus, their PD Bob McKay ain't no slouch at sound, either, stretching all the way back to his halcyon days in San Diego when his hair was his own. :)
