Congrats Beasley on bringing Philly another 48 months of really boring drive home radio. This is nothing new for XTU with the multi-year deal they signed with morning host Scott "Snoozebar" Evans. If the Philly-area's country fan base were larger maybe they'd have something more fun and exciting to listen to than the single choice at 92.5.

I like Kim Douglas on XTU, but that's about it. "Cadilac Jack" is kinda pukey for market 6...

What do you expect for a market that isn't really passionate about Country at all though?

The ratings have reflected a fairly good audience for country in this market. I would think the audience would support a more uptempo jock presentation like WCTO. The bland jocks match the carefully tested music selections, it takes them months sometimes to add songs charting elsewhere. I guess safe and status quo is what they think works for them and the targeted young adult female audience. Luckily I can listen to Cat Country in Montgomery Co. or more uptempo stations on the net, or watch CMT to see what the latest songs really are.

Well Well Well, Kim Douglas on XTU huh. She is one of many Dj's who bounce around the Philly market jumping ship every so often. Quite honestly, She was Blah on MIX 95.7, so it doesn't surprise me that she reared her stale on-air delivery at Safe Country WXTU.

Wake up on the wrong side of the bed again?
Kim sounds great wherever she works. She's a real pro.

It is very nice to hear that Cadillac got a 4-year extension.

I do listen once in a while to him, and I honestly believe that he is very pleasureable to listen to. He does a great job relating to the audience that listens.

I saw some amazing criticisms here from some of you, and I can understand where you may be coming from. In fairness, I believe that he's attracting a loyal audience to XTU, and I feel loyalty is something that is missing not just in radio, but in any business nowadays.

Why do you think Leigh Richards has been there as long as she has? There's another example of a loyal base. When you have that, the listeners feel that the people are 'part of their life'--even if they do not see them, hearing them still makes them feel quite a bit at home.

So kudos to Cadillac...I'm sure their target demo will be very happy.

Good for XTU. They are a great sounding station period. Its actually refreshing that a station has enough respect for their audience that they don't try to constantly tweak something that already works. Bob Mckay is probably the best PD in Philadelphia.

Leigh Richards base goes beyond the current era of XTU. I listened to her on WRCP (Sarah Louise), WFIL (country & oldies & straight-man to Joey Reynolds)& WTTM before she joined XTU. She is an excellent country radio personality & wish she could talk more. If they ever did an "XTU Classic" AM station like some people were wishing for in threads below, she would be an excellent choice to voice that station.

Re: Good for you, Jack!

I'm asking this seriously - Is it difficult to make a name for yourself with a radio name like 'Cadillac Jack'? There seems to be one in every market, so you have to add "the one from WXTU in Philadelphia" to clarify. I was listening to some station on the net from Florida area Sunday during the hurricane and they had a report from "Mark the Shark", of course sadly not our own, but it's amazing how names spread. Wasn't there a Cadillac Jack in the Harrisburg area, too?

Not to mention the Cadillac Jack of Eagle 106.....

We have one here in CT he does traffic (and not very well) on Radio and TV.

John, asking about names in a city where two stations have a Rocco seems a little obvious don't it?

Another name I hear alot of is Chaz, and K names K names are very popular.

Yes a bunch of years ago, WLAN, FM97 did indeed have a "cadillac Jack".
He is the same guy on at WXTU, however I do not know if Cadillac Jack worked for John Lander at eagle 106

In '86 I ran into a Cadillac Jack at WAPE FM Jacksonville during the WJAX FM
ownership change. I think he was named by PD Mark Driscoll..who was
trying to re-create the old WAPE Am from the 60'and 70's.

Alot of new guys were given older DJ's names. Bobby Ocean..Kandy Klutch
..etc. In later years around '98 or '99 I met up with "Cadillac Jack"
who had changed his name to Human Numan. ( I recognized his voice :)when listening to Z100 in NYC. We got together and he told me he thinks he had the original Cadillac Jack name and others followed.

Do any of the Cadillac Jacks even drive a Cadillac? :)

My friend drove a Mazda ..

Maybe Cadillac Jack is Wolfman Jack's long lost cousin...

:)

In defense of Cadillac Jack and Scott Evans, they are "safe" entertainment doing a family-formatted station's basic job. With them, you always know what you're going to get. Plus, the kids can listen with the parents OR by themselves.

Caddy and Scott are basically very nice people in person and on the air. Go to a Caddy personal appearance and just watch him work the crowd or the room. The man's great at what he does. Scott and Andie work well together and Mornings are never jarring or whacked. A cup of coffee, some nice music and safe entertainment are their hallmarks.

They're both...Scott and Caddy...well-worth the more than $100,000.00 they get per year in salary. Add remotes and commercial endorsements and you can drop another $50/$75K in the kitty...each.

As you correctly state, though, the numbers for XTU usually range between the low 3's 12-plus to a high of the mid-4's 12-plus, due to the limited pool of P1s and P2's. Remember that they tried to broaden their base a couple of years ago with their Country Rock Nights which, unfortunately for those who enjoyed the addition of Eagles and more, was unceremoniously yanked.

That is the Country Conundrum: broaden musically and lose the traditionalists or stay within narrow, defined "borders" and fail to cume new listeners for any appreciable TSLs.

All in all, I think XTU carries the whole thing off very well...and, I don't love Country a lot. Go figure.

I have to disagree, though, with your original idea: what may be "boring" to one listener is entertaining to another. That may be the reason that XTU is usually a player in the money demos. Beasley recently declared that their profits were up, based mainly on the successes of XTU.

One thing that can't be argued. Boredom is a relative term. But safe is not entertaining. This is the common fault of radio today. You can be family-friendly and put on an entertaining show. IMHO Cadillac and Scott are safe and are not entertaining. They are nice guys and that's endearing at events but if they had a personality beyond a time/temp/here's (artist) on XTU style they'd have a lot better of a product.

Re: Good for you, Jack!

That's the same Cadillac Jack that was at Eagle 106, WLAN & WIOV in Lancaster, then up to Scranton at Froggy. He's now in Philly doing weekends on WOGL as "Jack Seville." I guess that was as close as he could get to calling himself Cadillac in Philly.

Unlike the one on WXTU, the one on WOGL actually has (or had) a personality on the air.

That's a fair critique and I understand what you're saying. Sometimes, though, blame (if that's the correct word) needs to be leveled at the PD...Bob Mckay. He calls the shots and defines the formatics. Good, bad or indifferent, the PD has the final say on what a jock does...or does NOT...do.

However, Bob was the PD at another of Beasley's decent properties (Miami) and did rather well. I'm inclined to cut him some slack here, to be honest.

Just out of curiousity, what would you add to their presentations that would make XTU a better and more listenable station?

Thanks!
