WXXI-AM signal question

Is WXXI-AM 1370 running at their full 5kw power these days, or have they changed their nighttime DA pattern? I am routinely in Canandaigua, where WXXI's nighttime signal has always been strong, but recently the signal has been subject to interference from other stations to the point where it has been nearly unlistenable. Just curious.

Blame the (now very crispy) critter that chewed through an underground cable...as a result, the signal's running with 1250 watts non-directional at night, instead of the usual 5 kW DA, until the problem can be fixed. Fingers crossed, that'll happen within the next few days.

At least the folks in Canandaigua, and the surrounding areas, won't have to listen to the beg-a-thon currently on the air at WXXI. Once I heard Silverstein, doing his imitation of Thurston Howell III, I went to WBUR on-line so I could hear Morning Edition uninterrupted.

Has this been fixed? The signal has not improved, at least not noticeably. Must have been one heck of a chomp by that critter!

Reminds me...something I've been wondering about. What is that station that so frequently bleeds into WXXI both day and (especially) night? I've never been able to catch a legal ID on it...but that's just because it drives me bonkers to listen to both stations duking it out. I've heard it even when driving right past the WXXI towers on I-590 (admittedly just when the WXXI programming is quiet, like a pause between programs...but it's there).

Most of the interference here in the Victor/Canandaigua area is at night from WFEA in Manchester NH. Lately the two signals are often at equal strength, and sometimes WFEA dominates, which never happened in the past. Understandable, however, if XXI is only running 1250 watts. I can't believe they don't have the money to fix this.

It's not a question of money...it's a question of parts. There were a few relays that got fried, I'm told, when the controller was trying (and repeatedly failing) to switch from day to night mode after the transmission line got chewed up, and the replacement parts are apparently made of unobtanium.

WFEA-1370's nighttime signal should not be interfering with WXXI's, since WFEA is just about directly east of WXXI by a few hundred miles and their nighttime pattern is a quite THIN figure-8 beaming north and south, with severe nulls to the west and east. Those WFEA nulls are supposed to be sending about 200 watts to the east and west.......

The culprit is more likely one of several class D signals to our south that have a history, shall we say, of not always powering down at sunset. It's an ongoing headache.

I have heard WDRC-AM on 1360 (Hartford) in the background while listening to WXXI.

"As of yesterday, all should be back to normal for WXXI-AM, in terms of the pattern switching."

Indeed, we're back to 5,000 powerful watts, serving Central and Western New York 24 hours a day.

Be big, be a builder....
