WXXI's Richard Gladwell Dies

Richard Gladwell passed Thursday morning.

Richard was a wonderful person and a great broadcaster.

My condolences goes out to his family and his associates at WXXI-FM.

He was a great guy. I am happy that I got a chance to see him again before he went into the nursing home. It was pure serendipity that we saw each other and that makes even more special

I am deeply saddened to hear this. I have listened to Richard Gladwell's program "With Heart and Voice" over WFMT for years. It has always been one of my favorites. I loved the sound of his voice, and his commentary on the music.

I wonder what will happen now? Will they find another host for the program, or will it vanish from the airwaves with him? I surely hope not!

At a time when so much of radio plumbs the depths and degrades itself, Richard Gladwell’s career is a pointed reminder of the glorious heights that can be achieved by the medium. He will be missed by the listeners he served every bit as much as by his colleagues. May he rest in peace.

With Heart and Voice, unlike many nationally syndicated programs, is timeless--it will not date like American Top 40. One thing we can say, is that Richard and his technical producer Dave Sluberski prepared an extensive library of WH&V programs, including many scheduled to feed during the coming months which will be first-run for the national station line-up. Distribution of the program to its affiliates is guaranteed through the last Sunday in June of 2010, when the current season is scheduled to conclude.

Richard Gladwell was a lovely man who lived a long and productive life doing what he loved. Those of us who knew him, whether in person, or on the radio are blessed to have had him in our lives.

As an avid listener to Mr. Gladwell's program I was shocked to return home from vacation and read about his passing in Sunday's newspaper.

One just had to listen to Richard's program and you could hear how much effort he put into the selection of the music he played; and what beautiful music it was.

It would be a nice tribute if the Rochester Press Radio Club would mention Mr. Gladwell's contribution to Rochester radio at their next gathering.

Like everyone else who has contributed to this thread thus far, I, too, have enjoyed With Heart and Voice. Probably the fondest memory I have of the program, was when I was vacationing with family in Myrtle Beach, SC. While scanning the dial on a Sunday morning, I happened upon WHQR (91.3) from Wilmington, NC. After the legal ID, I heard Mr. Gladwell's familiar introduction: "With Heart and Voice is a production of WXXI-FM in Rochester, New York". I was unaware, at that time, that the show was carried by stations outside of upstate NY. So I was pleasantly surprised to find a little piece of home over 700 miles away.

When listening to the program during a pledge drive on one of its affiliates, someone remarked that a few listeners had complained about the airing of a "religious program" on a public radio station.

While the music featured was/is indeed "sacred music", I never saw WH&V as a "religious program". Rather, an hour of truly beautiful music that seemed to fit perfectly into one's Sunday morning routine.

I sincerely hope that the program will air in repeats long after June of next year. WCLV continued to offer repeats of Adventures in Good Music for years after the passing of Karl Haas. Let us hope that WXXI will do the same for With Heart and Voice.
