"WXXX" Air Check

In the early to mid 80's while working at WENS, I came upon a fake air check of "WXXX" that was hilarious. I can't even mention most of the words therein, but one of the DJ's was "The Slasher". The audio sounded exactly like it was recorded off of an AM modulation monitor complete with all the heavy compression of the day. The jocks were superb Top 40 screamers. Never did find who was behind it. If anyone has this, I'd be interested in getting a copy of it. Arguably the funniest thing I have ever heard come out of a speaker.

Bob I don't recall hearing that particular tape, but Howard Hoffman (formerly of WABC, KMEL and most recently a production director for ABC/Citadel in California) did a couple of well-produced and funny "spoof" air-checks of the Top 40 format in the early 80's. I'll check some of the air check newsgroups and see if anyone remembers the WXXX tape.

Howard Hoffman was behind "NINE!" which is great. Then there's the country jingle package spoof "There Buddy". I don't know if it was WXXX but I remember a top 40 sendup where jocks were screaming "Giving Gary what it f**king deserves!"

I'll second that emotion. It is funny as hell. I just checked Google and the only mention of "WXXX Gary" is this thread.

Wasn't it WWWX and they called it "3WX...giving Gary, Indiana what it f***ing deserves". It was vulgar...and hysterical!
I think you're right! I'm embarrassed to say how funny I found it but it is arguably the funniest thing I've ever heard. Generally I believe that adding foul language to something detracts from the intended message. This is one of very very very few cases where a censored version just wouldn't have been the same. It's been decades since I heard it...thanks for refreshing my memory within the limits of a family friendly forum.

I think my brain just melted...
WHO WERE THESE GUYS??? I throw down the gauntlet to them. DAMN FUNNY. If I had heard this before I got behind a mic...I'd be in JAIL.
Thanks for posting it.

(and it should be noted that the "historical" part of the show: Harry Balls, after what Fort Wayne went through over naming the current government center when most citizens wanted it named after former mayor Harry Baals, pronounced "balls," causing unwanted national media attention, is a RIOT. CLASSIC.)

Every day a new surprise. Thanks for that.
Wow. That's some check! I don't remember WLTH or WWCA ever sounding that big, either.

I do remember as a boy standing on Broadway at the big studio window in front of WLTH 1370
watching them spin the newest release by Blood, Sweat and Tears, Spinning Wheel.

It would be very hard for someone who was not physically living in the area to understand the
rapid urban decay and divisiveness that spawned this reflection of reality.

Whoever made it MUST have been local to the area, fully aware of the hate and tension.
A mention of East Gary would put this at 1977 or before, when
East Gary got tired of being associated with Gary, and reverted to Lake Station, the old original name from 1852.

I got brave and put it on the Part 15 AM about 9:45PM and decided to pull out of it at 9:59, just before the
"feminine care product" commercial ran.
Anyone who would be listening to my station would already know that something crazy like this might be aired.

Never in a million years could I imagine WWCA or WLTH sounding like that.

Killer processing.
It sounds very much like they put a station on a dummy antenna & recorded this off the air monitor at the transmitter. It has a sound that is mighty tough to duplicate in a production room...especially in the 1970's!

Let me say that I have never looked at a console in quite the same way since hearing this masterpiece.

I love a challenge. This was fun to clean up and revive.
Still a little bit of mp3 zizzies but all in one phase now and much fuller sounding.

31 Mb 256k mp3 mono file.

Seeing "NINE!" mentioned brings back lots of great memories about radio parodies, commercial parodies and jingle parodies.
Howard Hoffman and Pete Salant (w/others) created some of the funniest stuff I have ever heard.
"NINE!" was just the beginning. 20+ years later the entire gang reunited to produce "NINETY-NINE", a parody at what radio had evolved into by 1999. Equally hilarious.. but the funniest of all parodies (also done by Hoffman, Salant and friends) was called "The Last Q Format."
This parodied the great 70's Q Format, more specifically the Bartell Q Format (WOKY-Milwaukee, KCBQ-San Diego, WMYQ-Miami and others).
All of these are available on Uncle Ricky's website.
