WXXY The Eighties Channel

I was reading this tribute website http://www.wxxychicago.com and lots of great memories came back, great imaging, big radio sound(processing), I thought they using Aphex 1010 (?) and great 80's style DJ's.
I miss a tribute livestream of this station, I don't know if it's around already? So yes, I like to have a link.
I never hear a 80's internet radiostation like WXXY on the web. It was very well programmed, everything just felt right. I hope someone pick things up and give it a try on the internet if there is no alternative.

There is a station like WXXY / WYXX on the internet and on the radio, but it is automated without DJ's.

http://www.wtmx.com
(click on 'Audio/Video' at the right, then on the pop-up box click on '80's STREAM')

'The Mix Totally 80's' is also available with an HD radio at 101.9 WTMX-HD2. By the way, the music is much broader than the adult contemporary format that WCLR (and WTMX starting in 1989) was actually playing in the 80's.

I remember that the audio from Robert Murphy's morning show on WXXY / WYXX was poor (tinny-sounding). Was he using a different studio? I liked 'Rock of the 80's' which was a hard rock/pop metal show hosted by Mark Zander on Saturday nights.

Yes I know WTMX but that's not the real deal. Poor audio quality and not well programmed as WXXY. Imaging is also not great.

Nice to read all those memories and other 80's stream alternatives but it never reach the quality of WXXY. Jingles, sound, format. I never hear a good alternative yet. So the best alternative would be a tribute stream with the jingles, the format and an 'emulate' processing set up from XXY. I hope someone can set up something?

I always smile when I see people talking about The 80's Channel! Let me tell you, we had FAR more fun than should have been allowed (or IS allowed in radio today)! Had we been a full signal from the Hancock or Sears, we'd NEVER have gotten away with it. Say what you will about Big City Radio, but they supported creative, new formats. They gave us the best tools to build.

www.wxxychicago.com is a website I designed in August 2009 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of our sign-on. It's STILL a work-in-progress. All of our jingles are posted, along with a 38 minute composite of our DJs. Of course, there's a LOT I am missing. It's easy to forget about archiving when the show is still going strong. I welcome anyone's airchecks of The 80's Channel.

From 2003-2007, I programmed www.80sNow.com, which closely mimiced WXXY. 80's Now used Mitch Craig and Eric Edwards and JAM jingles before anyone else online.

It was SO hard leaving The 80's Channel. But, once the company replaced our incredible GM Rich Marston with the less-incredible Juan Montenegro, the writing was on the wall. That's when Robert Murphy announced his departure. I left the same day (1/5/2001) for the new 94.7 The Zone. Little known fact: The Zone was going to call itself "The 80's Channel" effective 1/29/2001 (WXXY's last day in the format). We even had the imaging produced. But, at the last minute, PD Bill Gamble changed his mind. In retrospect, I'm SO glad we didn't besmirch the name. I left the Zone less than 5 months later. The 80's left the Zone shortly thereafter.

Thanks for bringing my favorite station of all-time back to life on the boards here. What an incredible ride!

Hi Jeffrey, kind words about this thread. Yes 80snow.com was a good alternative. It's a pitty that you stopped with that stream. It's was the closest station to WXXY. I hope you can bring it back. Also the processing of that stream was amazing good.

Erwin-

For a while towards the end of the 80sNow.com era (2007), I was airing "Jeffro Radio" on the weekends. It's gone through a number of phases since then. Currently, it's 80's, 90's, 2K and today. We play LOTS of songs you never hear on the radio. Hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think...

Personaly, for me the 90's and 2k are not my favorite music decades. So only the 80's would be enough on your stream. I like your jingles though, they sounding 'big'. Only your soundprocessing is too heavy In my opinion. I hear a lot of clipping. What are you using for soundprocessing for the stream?

I'm the biggest fan of the 80's you'll find. But, I also like a LOT more. As this stream is mainly for my own entertainment, it's basically MY "iPod on shuffle" with jingles. If someone else digs it, so be it ;-)

That's the ONLY way to go! I actually have more jingles running on Jeffro Radio than we had on WXXY.

Believe me. You're not the first person to criticize my processing. I'm a "wall of sound" guy. I like it much harder than most. Currently using a plugin with 5 band processor, AGC, a dual band compresor/limiter and a stereo expander. Yep...it's LOUD! If I see needles move, it's too weak. Obviously, if my goal were to get as many listeners as possible, I'd back off. But, this one's for me!

I'm also a wall of sound, big and wide stereo person, but not with too much clipping and distortion. What's the name of that 5 bands AGC and dual band comp/limiter? Sound Solution perhaps?

Yep. Sound Solution v1.31. I don't hear any distortion on my stream, and the clipping light has never lit up. So, I'm cool with it. Though, I readily admit I am NOT an audio engineer. If you have some fave settings on SS, I'd love to give them a test drive. Always interested in options...

I'm familiar with the Sound Solution processor. If you can PM your emailaddress, I'll send you a preset. Maybe you like it. If you like there is a emulated preset of the Optimod 8100 in it, I guess it sounds perfect for your format.

Jeff, thanks for the website. It is one of my bookmarked favorites. I love the trip down memory lane (as a kid of the 80's), and love all the jingles. Some of which are used by KHits now, The 80's channel on Sirius/XM uses them, but back in the day, Z95, Q101, and a couple others here used them, as well as WIXX up in Green Bay where I had to endure a short time living there.

Anyway, welcome back.
