WXYB gets notice and fine for operating at night

WXYB 1520 which shares a tower with WWBA 1040 has received a multi thousand dollar fine for operating at nite. An FCC inspection showed that the station operator could not shut off the transmitter. I'm surprised this didnt happen sooner. I've heard this station at nite for the last year. Isnt this station run in conjunction with St. Pete JC?

Heres the link to the FCC: http://www.fcc.gov/eb/FieldNotices/2003/DOC-282188A1.html

this station (1520) has been on the air at night, for at least the last 2 years that I'm aware of.

I'm not aware of any affiliation with St. Pete College, but I know that HCC had programming on 1520, in the mornings; I assume it was brokered.

I was surprised that Hillsborough Coummunity College had any programming on 1520, since 1520's signal is only marginal at best, in most of Tampa and points east.

Should have used the preview feature, since I somehow managed to intertwine the quote and my remarks.

At any rate 1520, as mentioned, I have noticed them on the air at night for at least the last 2 years, maybe longer.

If there was a problem turning off the transmitter, I would have thought that problem should have been resolved faster than a 2 year time period.

Other stations in the area, in the past, have forget to power down and/or go directional at night.

I remember 760 a.m. out of Seffner/Mango wasn't powering down and going directional at night until about 3 or 4 hours after local sunset.

I happened to be in an area where I should have been able to receive
WJR (Detroit) at night and lo and behold I was getting 760 out of Seffner/Mango as late as 8:45pm in December; I mentioned this to a friend, who knew someone in enforcement at the FCC and that "memory" problem was corrected within a few days and they were powering down and going directional the rest of December at 5:30 pm.

btw- when I clicked on that link, it made reference to a violation of a Clear Channel owned station in California.

My error, here is the correct link: http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-08-1143A1.doc

And yes, it was HCC not St. Pete. I always figured that they had some kind of post sunset authorization, but guess not. Ten lashes with a wet noodle for me.

Thanks so much for the new link, sbe 1!

I find it amazing that the operators were not even aware they were on the air at night; don't any of them ever listen to their own station, even occassionally to check the audio output etc?

I guess this can be a problem when everything is automated and operated by remote control and there are no live people on the premises.

There's another station on 1170 in Bushnell (I believe the call letters are WFKI) and they are supposed to be daytime only and it's amazing, the hours they are on and off the air; sometimes they are off the air during the day for a few hours, sometimes they are off the air for days at a time, sometime on the air at night, sometimes not.

When they are on the air, the format might be ESPN sports, might be religious, might be gospel; the format can switch back and forth during the same day; it's always a surprise!!

Haven't heard anything remotely live or local in several years; yet the have or had a CP to increase their power.

The operators are two Greek brothers who, years ago, purchased large blocks of time from our former AM (WLVU 1470 Dunedin), The brothers also operate WPSO 1500 in New Port Richey.
