WYAB or WOAD - Why do both claim to be the local MSU affiliate?

I was just wondering how it is that both WYAB and WOAD claim to be the local MSU affiliate. WYAB claims to reach all of the northern suburbs of Jackson, Mississippi, including Madison County, Yazoo County, and northern Hinds County, and WOAD-FM claims a coverage area extending northward to Grenada county and as far south as Jefferson Davis which certainly covers the Jackson Metro. I only ask because surely somebody is going to want exclusivity eventually and since it's (No offense YABsters-size isn't everything!)tiny signal is eclipsed by WOAD-FM, WYAB could lose that argument if it comes up. Apparantly so far the folks at WOAD haven't even paid attention to WYAB and it's efforts to position it self as metro area/north station but that'll probably change if WOAD loses a buy.
Does the Mississippi network even grant market exclusivity? I guess that would be a factor...

Good question about MSU. I can't imagine both stations being able to broadcast MSU for too long. I also see WYAB losing out. Nothing against Matt and the gang at B93 since they're all good people, but they may do better coming out broadcasting another team, like USM. I think they can make a better argument of having USM than WJNT because who can hear 'JNT at night?
______________

As the owner of that there radio station (WYAB), I can shed some light on the situation...

If anything, WOAD should be happy about it because they grab some of the MSU sponsors with which we make the initial contact. There were several examples this year where we had a sponsor on for MSU baseball in 2005, and then they appeared on WOAD for football 2005. We do some of the legwork for the interested sponsors, get them to commit, and then their ad agencies buy from WOAD.

Also, we've committed to carrying MSU football, basketball, AND baseball on FM. MSU baseball is not going to be on WOAD this year, but on WJDX 620 AM.

Besides, more than 75% of our sponsors for MSU come from Flora, Canton, and Yazoo City. I know that WOAD has more of a presence in Jackson, and doesn't care too much about what's going on in Flora.

We also have a signed contract for MSU sports through basketball 2007.

I'm not sure who we would carry if MSU weren't on WYAB....

Having a client already happy with results probably does help close the sale for the next station that comes calling, but I must point out that all but a few of the sponsors I heard were familiar Jackson area advertisers. Some are probably alumni supporters of all things MSU, and that's cool, too. They'd probably toss you something on GP to spread the gospel, so to speak.
As for WOAD-FM not having an interest in Flora or by extension Canton and Yazoo City- That's some of their strongest territory outside the core metro- it seems that black gospel has some fans (and groups) there. But it's great that the two stations can cover the same territory and not have an issue with each other. I figured the contract you mentioned was pre-existant to your tower move which effectively put you in WOAD-FM's backyard. It may not be a issue if the contracts don't address market exclusivity. If it does, then a move which effectively deprived another station of that exclusivity might cause a problem. It's just an interesting exercise to consider. Maybe DeadElvis can give us the quasi-legal lowdown...

We don't sell ads for MSU in Pickens, which is WOAD's city of license. We have precisely one advertiser on the "Jackson side" of County Line Road for MSU sports, and they've been on the station since before MSU was on WOAD. Other than that, our MSU advertisers are elsewhere.

Good point on the city of license- I always associate WOAD with Jackson proper but it's another one of those "re-located" stations. That probably explains why they don't make an issue of it.

> My question was about whether or not the Flora radio station tells advertisers that they only reach a certain area, or does it leave the implication that they serve the Jackson area? And I'd be careful about the "city of license" remark, as city of license is not as important as some folks think when it comes to signals greater than 3kw.

We have always marketed the station as Madison and Yazoo County.

If I promise to buy all the spots on both of the stations, can we agree not to carry anymore basketball games?.... And, move on to baseball?

Mississippi State University has a student population that consists of approximately 76% White and 17% Black students, with 8% Other. It struck me as peculiar when a "Black Gospel" station would want to carry a majority white college's football games. To me it seems almost as awkward as hearing a Jackson State or Tougaloo College game broadcast on Miss 103 or US 96.3 or any station that caters to a mostly white audience for that matter. 76% White student population means that the alumni and parents of students that keep up with MSU Sports are 76% White. I would almost bet you that the majority of people who keep up with MSU Football/Basketball/Baseball do no listen to WOAD other than when an MSU game is on. This is just simple demographics folks. Nothing complicated.

I'll take the road that you are not some racist pig..... and go the other way with the point that it would a perfect opportunity for WOAD to reach out to an advertising pool that it might otherwise miss... sounds like a good idea... and btw, most people don't want to hear sports on a music station... period...black, white, or green...it's about the money...

btw, you graduate from MSU?

Ya think the MSradio Man has a problem with an Urban station carrying football for MSU like it's gonna "pollute the water" or something? Or maybe he works for a station missing out on the ad revenue from the games? If the former is the case,I hope he's not an MSU grad. I'd be ashamed to count him as a fellow alumnus.
______________

Just for your information since you seem to be so curious about who I am, I am not a graduate of any college. I am 58 years old and a lifelong resident of Jackson and am proud to call Mississippi my home. I work in the construction business and just stumbled upon this message board because of my interest in Mississippi radio stations since I listen to them 5 and 6 hours a day with the kind of work that I do in construction. I just thought I’d leave my two cents worth on this topic. I am not racist, and if an all black station wants to carry MSU then that’s fine and dandy with me. Personally I don’t care because I don’t listen to it anyway, but I still hold to my opinion that when I first heard it on there it did sound a bit out of place. Sounds to me like most people that post things on here have some kind of inside connection with radio stations or either work at one. I didn’t mean to offend anyone by my previous post and if I did I apologize. From now on, I'll leave the posting to people who know more about radio than I do.

Best Regards!!!
