I'm not missing the point because I know no one in Wilmington would know the Atlanta station, but there were people listening to country music on what was WYAY.

I saw the name of the DJ who was on and looked her up. She's on WHGM in the Baltimore area, which is owned by the same company that just bought this WYAY and its simulcast partner.

Any evidence that call letters reinforcing local landmarks (KOIT), industries (WOOD), nicknames (WIND), markets (KDFW; KCMO; WACO), counties (KING), climate (KFOG) or format (WFAN) have a leg up?

Here is a list of current callsigns with meanings other than a moniker or a "backronym" like "Welcome South Brother" for WSB--WSB didn't pick their callsign.

88.5 WRAS = Radio At (Georgia) State

89.3 WRFG = Radio Free Georgia

90.1 WABE = Atlanta Board of Education

91.1 WREK = Ramblin' WREcK from Georgia Tech

91.9 WCLK = CLarK Atlanta University

92.1 WJGA = Jackson, GA

92.3 WMOQ-FM = MOnroe, GA

92.9 WZGC = General Cinema

99.3 WCON = Heritage callsign originally for Atlanta CONstitution until Cox bought the Constitution and had to divest WCON, now stands for COrNelia, GA


AM Radio Stations

590 WDWD = Walt Disney Walt Disney

610 WPLO = heritage callsign originally on 590 that meant the personal care company PLOugh, later part of Schering-Plough

640 WBIN = Black Information Network

680 WCNN = Cable News Network

920 WGKA = GlenKaren Associates, an ATL hi-fi shop, also a heritage callsign for 92.9

970 WNIV = New International Version of the Bible

1160 WCFO = Chief Financial Officer, related to a one-time business news format

1400 WLTA = ATL spelled backwards, also a heritage callsign for 99.7

WAVO stood for AVOndale Estates. WAVQ (now WUBL) was a sister station when an FM side couldn't have the same calls as an AM side with a different city of license. WQXI-FM (now WSTR) used to be WKXI for the same reason.

WGST stood for Georgia School of Technology.

WKLS stood for (Officer Don) Kennedy Lathom Swan, the three partners who started 96.1.

WWID (106.7) stood for WIDe Travel, a travel agency in Gainesville.

WAVO stood for AVOndale Estates. .

I don't know what WAVO stood for in Charlotte NC but its most memorable format was adult standards which they did for ten years.
