WYDE being helped by WAPI and WERC being on FM?

In the latest Arbitron ratings for Birmingham, WYDE had a 1.3. The station has shown an uptick in the last 2 books. WYDE has big national talkers like Laura Ingraham and Dave Ramsey. DO you think that more people are finding WYDE because the other Birmingham talk stations are now available on FM?
 
I think it's possible that more people are aware of its existence by it being on FM along with the other FM talkers, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're listening to it -- a 1.3 is hardly noteworthy, even if it is an upswing.
 
I agree, a 100,000 FM station with a 1.3 share is hardly something to bragg about. The station does not have mass appeal.
 
Dave Ramsey is pretty hot right now but the rest of the (syndicated) talk lineup is B-team. Still, I think the 1.3 is more due to poor coverage of the Birmingham metro than anything else. Talk on FM is big wherever it is, but WYDE seems to be the exception to that rule, even though they were first to FM in the region. They've shown up in the Huntsville and Tuscaloosa ratings on a regular basis, but how do you sell to such a wide audience?
 
I'd make it a Cullman only station again and put the hillbilly music back on. Oh yea, I'd do the beautiful music thing from 9-11 pm, like they did many years ago. What a mix that was.

I think the poor ratings can be attributed (somewhat) to the poor signal. The "Source"'s ratings were much better in its previous life, though. IIRC, the 12+ numbers for the original "Source" were around a 2.5-3 share, so the poor ratings can't all be blamed on the weaker signal. After WYDE dropped the talk for classic hits, they never did recover, ratings-wise. Once they realized their mistake and went back to talk, their listeners didn't care about returning at that point. Many of them had already moved on to either WAPI or WERC.

I remember the station's pre-Birmingham days as WFMH. Yeah, that was a very eclectic mix of programming they had there. :D

As far as Crawford ever reverting WYDE back to a Cullman station...not gonna happen. They'd sell it as a "Birmingham station" before they ever did anything such as that. With WYDE in Crawford's hands, it's probably never going to have much success, unfortunately. WDJC is really their only property that has ever done well...or probably ever will.
