WYDE Format Flip

[WBGR FM 93.1]

As of today, 101 WYDE has flipped. They're airing talk programming that sounds like it is in a coffee can, and has no station ID's. They are also carrying USA/IRN Radio news.

So far, I cant handle listening in for too long; it is too "boring" and Tammy Bruce screams when she's on air

Are you sure you were listening to WYDE? It's about 2:35 pm here now, and both WYDE AM and FM were playing "She's Gone" by Hall and Oates. ???

as of today, 4:15, i'm listeing to www.thesoundla.com - featuring folkies doing "guest dj work" - they've had chrissie hein of the pretenders and michael fronte? of spearhead....right now, playing some talking heads. good stuff. we need more of that here and less of that country BS.

I know I sound crazy, but today they were airing new talk programming. By 4:30 though, they were back to playing Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Imiginary Lover." Guess they're "still the same" but with a little more talk and a lot less action

What would you flip WYDE to, if you could do it? They've had many formats with not much succes with any of them. I would also like to know if WYDE is one of the lowest rated 100 KW stations in the country.

Hi, guys...Live in East Alabama and I'm really not suprised about 101.1

WYDE...In the beginning was it (Summer of 2007?) they never came close

to giving 96.5 a challenge...Strange, talk in the day music at night, sounds

like block programming of the 60's and 70's...Business is way off right now

because of the economy...Some format changes happening tomorrow (Jan

5) here in Oxford...

AAA of course....get some AAA into hsv, florence, yah bham has it now, somewhat....but hey, whoever has that stick really should try to market it in all the areas it can reach, too...

Or alternative rock, but I highly doubt that Crawford will allow either format on 101.1. Until they finally sell the station, nothing will ever change.

This station needs good programming cheap, and it needs something that Birmingham, Huntsville, Gadsden, and all points in between might listen to (since WYDE-FM doesn't superiorly cover either of these metered markets). The only solution I see is a satellite format.

And since this is Crawford-Birmingham we're talking about, I don't see anything harder than oldies. You can't use ABC's "True Oldies" because WLOR in Huntsville has it, so perhaps Dial Global's "Kool Gold". One other option might include the new "Oasis" AC format that Sovereign City Radio has been advertising on R-I.

Funny that, Sovereign City has just been shut down according to the news on the front page. Tough times all around.

Talk about your strange coincidences, Sovereign City going under when they could have had their biggest clearance ever on the 100kw WYDE-FM.

Heck, at this point, Crawford might as well try Regional Mexican or another Spanish language format.

I have an Idea... How about ABC's todays best country or ABC's Real Country. Even though Bhm doesn't need another Country station, they could market it as if it were from Cullman. it would never be in the top 10, but I bet it would be a couple spots ahead of where it is now.

WYDE (then WFMH) was using some type of satellite country format when they upgraded the signal back about 10 yrs ago. Might have been "Real Country". I remember hearing the station when it first came on with that new and improved signal over Birmingham, and thought...wow. It took Eddins a while to realize what an opportunity they had to get the signal into Birmingham. For years, I had thought that they were sitting on a gold mine and didn't even realize it, with all the other FM's moving in closer to Birmingham. I couldn't figure out why they waited so long to do it. When they started covering Birmingham, I didn't think the country format would last too long,though. At the time, we had WZZK and WDXB already programming country, plus the fact that WFMH was more along the lines of classic country than anything else. I like country music, too (especially classic country), but lets face it...this area has a lot of country stations. Too bad "Reality" couldn't do more with the station than what they did. And Crawford has about finished the station off completely. What a shame, especially for a station using calls from a legendary Birmingham AM. Who would've ever thought the WYDE calls would have wound up on Cullman's 101.1 (or AM 1260, too for that matter)?

I'm still wondering what happened to that supposed "format change" for WYDE that was going to transpire after the air staff was let go. What was that...two months ago? I still think talk is what's going to eventually land back on there, even if it's phased in during different dayparts a little at a time. WYDE already has done that twice now with the Laura Ingraham show and then Mancow.

You're correct, it was "Real Country." At that time though, I was only about 8 yrs old. Then Real Country and WFMH moved to 95.5, which had a 6 KW tx near Holly Pond, then around 2002 had translator 105.3 in Hartselle. I know I mention Real Country too much on here, but I guess I'm a "Real Country" Junkie. ;D Maybe when WKLD re debuts in the HSV market, maybe thaey will be Real Country; turn a sad event into something not so bad.

yah? well i had it better than all you guys put together. When I was growing up WFMH was coming in loud and clear on our telephone lines. I grew up in Woodland Heights - on the hill behind where Highways 157 and 31 come together in Cullman - prolly a mile from the transmitter towers over by West Elem....or was I picking up then WXXR...within walking distance (1340 am?). I'm pretty sure it was WFMH....afterall, I started my radio career on that 1340 am stick... (toothpick?)

From the area you're describing where you grew up at, it sounds like telephone lines weren't the only problems.... especially on those mornings of sales at Cullman Stockyard, I imagine the smell was coming in loud and clear too . Out here, the only thing that stinks are the lack of good stations and the chicken houses 1/3 mile away...
