WYDE to change formats...again

I just found this on Radio and Records about Crawford letting the airstaff go, with a format change coming very soon. Wonder what the next format's going to be over there. Will Crawford change the station's name three times in one week's time as it did before? :D

Here's the info on Radio and Records about it.

WYDE Goes Bye-Bye

101 really wasn't that bad, they gave it their best shot. I'd bet it will turn into some type of christain/gospel station, since Crawford seems to program most of their stations that way. Speaking of 101, does anyone know of another 100 KW station that does high school football?

Well, I guess the million dollar question has been answered.

"How many stations do Burt and Kurt get to destroy before they get fired?"

Three, The Source, Legends, 101 WYDE.

Time to dust off those old reels, Bill Clinton jokes and work on the always timely Ronald Reagan impression.

Congrats Crawdaddy.

Prediction - back to talk, all syndicated

Bitter? You bet.

I'm not sure if your referring to the Birmingham market or just stations in general, but 100kw WAAZ carries Crestview (Florida) High School sports (Football and some baseball). As far as I know, Crestview High is the only school in this area that has all of their football games on the radio.

Wow

Whats the deal with that company. I have worked all over the Home Market and I have never seen a station flip
as many times 101.

Can someone tell me whats up over there

O your Right about that Word and its a shame but O well thats Radio for ya :D

No real surprise that they're changing formats. After all, they hardly made an impact with the format, even though there was and is a niche to be filled with an oldies-classic hits station (sorry, I don't think that Magic 96.5 truly fits the bill). The problem for WYDE was that 97-7 the Peach, that little ole station from Jemison does a better job with essentially the same format. Now, if you could only pick up the Peach north of the I-65/Montgomery Highway interchange in Hoover...

Changing formats again? What a surprise.

I suppose they won't ever go down the alternative/modern rock road considering Crawford's standards. Well, going back to talk with a different name and attitude probably be the best option to make an impact on a blowtorch signal in my opinion.

I don't think the "Peach" would've had much impact on WYDE anyway, being a class A and so far removed from Birmingham; most folks probably don't even know it exists. The "Peach" likes to market itself as a southern Birmingham suburb station since the signal doesn't make it all the way to the Magic City (the station regularly ID's itself as Jemison, followed by one or more southern Shelby county suburbs, i.e. Calera, Montevallo, Columbiana, etc). I have heard the station, however, north of the I-65/Montgomery Hwy area, but the signal's not all that great, this is all via a car stereo, too on top of Shades Mountain, mind you. I live in south Shelby County and receive a city-grade signal from WHPH, but I bet even with that good a signal throughout this area, most people in Shelby county have never heard of the station. You could ask them if they listen to/ever heard of the "Peach" and they'd probably reply, "The WHAT??". :D

97.7 The Peach WHPH has a CP to go from 3100W at 459 from a tower about 8 miles NW of Clanton to 13,000 Watts at 472 feet from a tower about 10 miles west of where it was now.

This is all made possible by the move of WKLD 97.7 Oneonta, AL which Great South (owners of WHPH) bought from Blount County Broadcasting Service, and now has a permit for 950W at 823 feet licensed to Union Grove, AL from a tower 10 miles NW of Arab.

When you flip a station too much, no one listens to it because they don't trust that it'll stay that way for long. I'm reminded of 93.3 here in Huntsville. The station has changed SO many times and is country for the 3rd time now, yet still not impressive numbers. Oh, and speaking of moves, has anyone noticed that back in June WYDE put in an application to increase tower height from 376m to 461m? This will give them a few extra miles of coverage. As if the signal wasn't already a monster! The WHPH CP will improve coverage into birmingham some, but will still be rimshot. They will increase their coverage area south of Birmingham though.

Sounds like mass chaos over there today at WYDE. This morning around 9 am, WYDE AM and FM were airing Laura Ingraham. I was wondering if maybe talk was the new permanent format, but there was no mention of any new station name, etc between the program...just the usual station ID at the top of the hour (very odd, too, during the station ID hearing "Playing the Greatest Hits of All Time" followed by the calls when it's just been airing talk programming, lol). And then...this afternoon, the FM was off the air, and the AM was back to playing the classic hits simulcast...minus the FM, of course. About an hour ago, both the AM and FM were on the air, and airing the classic hits format again. Hmmmmmmmmm........

What's in store for tomorrow? Stay tuned, folks...It'll be interesting.

I hate to admit it, but i'm gonna miss 101 WYDE. Didn't care too mush for the 80's stuff, since all the other stations play them. But, I liked all the other music though. Since WKLD is moving toward HSV this November, I may be able to hear the peach while KLD is off for a few days. It may be just me, but for the past couple months, their signal doesn't seem as strong either around the house, and I only live 15 miles from the tower. I was putting up campaign signs off 75 near Henegar in NE Dekalb County last week and Could barely hear them, but back in April was able to hear them at the bottom of a steep hill off I65 120 miles south near Prattville.

Let the flippin' begin ::)

I wonder if the old bays (4 or is it 6?) for 97.7 still exsists on the WKLF-AM 980 tower in Clanton? They could use them as an emergency backup..

Just an absolutely random thought before bed... could've theoretically explained the weaker signal.

WYDE flipping formats again? Geez, my history page for them has more changes than Joan River's face.

Can't speak for Alabama, but in my neck o' Mississippi practically every station carries high school football on Friday nights, including stations like Bob FM in Greenwood, the French Camp Academy station on 107.9 and Sunny 93 in the Columbus/Tupelo market. All three are 100kw; Sunny and French Camp radio both have monster signals, to boot.
