WYFE 600

Hey Guys:

I saw this on a blog web site. It it true that 600 was once WYFE, a country format with all female D.J's? It also said that it was on a short time in 1958. True? Could have the station ran between the R&B WMRY and Beautiful Music WWOM days?

Thanks

T.J.

Yes, I remember WYFE 600 AM advertising in the papers. That was a half-century ago, but I moved that fall and can't tell you any more about it. When I returned on a visit in the early sixties, I recall a middle-aged adult telling me what great music there was on it, and he punched up the radio to 600 AM WWOM-- "The Wonderful World of Music." It was a beautiful music format, antedating FM. At the time, New Orleans had only two FM stations that I recall, WDSU-FM 105.3 FM (WDSU 1280 AM) and the six-hour-a-day WRCM 97.1, owned by the Poppa Stoppa station, WJMR 990 AM. Both just duplicated the AM stations.

Hey RFLA:

Thank you for the reply. Yes I do know about David Ecuardo's (Gleason) website on radio. He has most of the broadcasting yearbooks on that site. That is where I have done most of my research. The only problem is that from 1971 to 1981 are the only yearbooks that give format information on all stations. From 1971 and back (incl 50's and 60's) they give all radio station info but formats. That is why I am asking some of these questions to fill in the blanks.

If you can help out with some of the questions I would really appreciate it big time.

Thanks

T.J.
