WYGY is about to take over...

Just found this today in the FCC records: WYGY has filed an application for new construction and a power increase. The stick is moving to Taylor Mill and will be accompanied by a TEN FOLD increase in signal power (from 2.5kW to 25kW). If you're not sure what that means, it's a lot of zeroes... and it will also make WYGY the single most powerful FM stick in downtown Cincinnati.

Once this happens, your tuner will never skip over 97.3 on seek again. I spoke to our Chief and although the height above sea level isn't the same, it's still going to be one heck of a respectable signal. Makes you wonder what the ultimate format will become; Bonneville certainly isn't going to whip their own heritage country stick into submission.

Keep in mind that obtain a +3dB increase in effective power, you have to double the transmitter output. Again, this is a TEN FOLD increase. Do the math.

Details here for those of you who are so inclined.

Where in Taylor Mill is the new tower being constructed? If its where the old WIZF-WHKK tower was on the hill it should be a mosnter signal with 25kw.

Okay, I'm not very smart.. but I can't find the application or info that changed the COL to Ft. Thomas from Lebanon. Why isn't that in the list of applications?

Why did CBS or Entercom not make this move if it's so positive?

Why or why not the move was not made before is irrelevant... it's happening now, and that IS relevant.

As far as the actual tower location, I suspect the old TV 54 location, but I haven't researched it as of this posting. Make no mistake, it's going to be a monster signal. 25kW! WEBN and WKRQ are currently licensed for 16kW, and they hold the power crown until the new YGY signal gets fired up. This bad boy is going to reach from Sparta to Hamilton and penetrate the downtown area exceptionally well.

You forgot the second half of the equation...height. Height and power determine FM coverage.

WYGY is applying for a class increase from A to C3 (C3 because the proposed tower site is in Kentucky which is Zone II land). Proposed facilities are 25kW at 100m above average terrain.

The Class B's are allowed to run 50kW at 150m or equivalent. They will always enjoy more coverage than a C3/B1.

Actually, I didn't forget that. If you read the intial post, you'll see a comment to that effect.

I spoke to our Chief and although the height above sea level isn't the same, it's still going to be one heck of a respectable signal.

If you want to ding me on a technicality, call me out for not using HAAT as the height measurement. Bottom line, this thing is going to boom when it's completed.

If this is a fate accompli (I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know about the spelling), why doesn't every Cincinnati FM move to Newport/Covington and boost their signal?

I think I'm missing something. Please inform....

Thanks

CBS didn't do it because they didn't care.

Entercom didn't do it because they were here for a cup of coffee and left.

Say GOODBYE to 97.7 in Mason. Ain't gonna happen now.

AHA! Why do you think Bonneville is so happy with helping First move 95.7 into Sharonville, ding ding! They could keep it country, I really dont know what would work cause there are some sticky fingers between Cumulus and 2060 Reading. It was all over the frequency swap (Cumulus cant hurt Bonneville and visa versa). It will be interesting to see.

take over what? I didn't even know the station still existed...

Not so sure about that. WOXY already has a CP for the Mason move. That had to be protected in order for the WYGY application to be considered...correct?

WAMZ 97.5 Louisville held a CP (BPH-19990607IB) to move their 100KW signal to the WHAS AM tower east of Louisville. That CP was cancelled in 2002, making this move possible.

I doubt WLW would ever let the Reds leave. But more and more MLB teams are buying their own flagship stations in the FM band. Maybe the Reds will take it over for Reds baseball?

There's a tower on a hill southeast of 275 & KY16. That would be pretty close to Taylor Mill. The tower looks like it's 400 feet or so and has very little on it now, so windloading shouldn't be a problem.

Look at the NW corner of I-275 & Taylor Mill Road. At least that's where google maps pointed when I entered the proposed location and I do see a tower on the map. Go to maps.google.com & paste these numbers in : 39 01 27.8 -84 30 44.2 . Select the Hybrid map & you'll see a satellite picture of the site with road names superimposed. You'll also see a tower that doesn't appear to be painted, so it probably has a strobe light on it.

so, if they don't stay a flanker what format is there to take and work?

Movin'. Bonneville already does it in St. Louis and, given the track record Mojo 94.9 had, would be smart. Plus they aren't subject to the non-compete clause Cumulus inked with Radio One.

Better Yet...I'd like Bonneville to flip 97.3 to their Love FM format. I'm listening to LoveFM 100.3 in Chicago online, http://www.wilv.com/ and it sounds great with their Saturday Night Dance Party. A love FM Format would do well as it's similar to the old Mojo 949
