WYKS Kiss 1053 in Gainesville, where's the RDS?

Clearly, this is a station designed for Gainesville, not Ocala. When will Ocala get a Top 40 that covers Marion county too? On another note, what's up with the RDS, it just shows "WYKS", that's it, no song/artist information.

Ocala has not had its own CHR since the former Z 93 became K-Country 93.7 in 1994. Sab Cupelli attempted to target Ocala with CHR on Wow 104 (104.3) in 2005 and 2006; however, the class A signal is too weak to make any impact in Ocala listening although it does fine signal wise in Citrus County.

As for when will Ocala get another CHR, that is difficult to pin-point. The existing Ocala FM stations are doing fine in ratings and revenues with what they are doing now. If there is some way a new signal can move into Ocala, then a CHR format may be worth considering for the new station; However, for the time being, I don't see an existing Ocala FM flipping format.

RDS... It seems that about 1/3 of stations I've noticed using RDS have problems with it. I'd be more impressed to hear that it was working fine on a station. Plus, out of 5 car radios, I only have RDS on 1 of them. It doesn't appear to be catching on any faster than HD radio.
I love the idea of RDS since most stations do not announce songs and bands anymore, but I can't remember RDS working on any station when I wanted to find out what they were playing.
Don't the Brit's have a system using something like RDS to simulcast stations on transmitters all over the country that allows your radio to pick out the strongest signal to lock in? Kinda like cell phones locking on to the strongest towers.

You have 5 car radios? Wow, where do you park them all?
... well two are in the driveway, one is... I don't really know... and two are covered in dust somewhere in my junk treasure filled garage. I've only seen RDS on car radios and most of them were in (Chrysler?) rental cars. Am I blind or do I just have friends and family too poor to buy a car with a fancy-schmancy stereo? :-[
It really would be news to me to find out RDS was a common feature on radios now.

RDS is fairly common these days, though it's mainly found on newer factory installed radios. Most of the newer radio chipsets include the decoder, so the designers need only interface the decoded output to the radio's display.

As for WYKS, about 10 years ago, I suggested to Doug that he could cut his phone line expenses to WAJD by putting an SCA on WYKS and using that as the STL for WAJD. An added benefit would be FM quality audio that could be decoded in select places that target kids, like O2Bkids, etc. He liked the idea but didn't want to spend any money buying SCA radios and Jeri didn't like the idea of compromising WYKS's signal by adding an SCA. So, what do they do? They add a do-nothing SCA to transmit RDS. By my figures, the equalized 8kHz loop to the AM costs about $125/mo. Let's see: $125 x 12mo x10yrs = $15,000 that they would have saved by now. Well, as the saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water..."

So, how many of these cars actually run?

Mom? When did you start posting on radio-info?

I've taken this thread way off topic... I better stop posting before a moderator gets after me. I'm going to go educate myself about RDS on Wikipedia or somewhere. Bye.

So basically, someone at WYKS took the cheapo weasal way out on RDS?

I dunno if I'd say that, exactly. They spent the money to put the system in place, but they didn't set it up so that the song titles and artists were displayed. I don't know why. It could have been a labor intensive thing, or maybe their automation software just doesn't support that. Or maybe nobody over there knows how to do it. My point wasn't that they cheaped out, rather that they might have gotten more bang for the buck if they'd used the SCA to dump their phone line costs instead of RDS.
