WYNY-FM

It's been 15 years people... how many times a year do we see this topic, and for the most part, the pro-country side is not NY'ers... is this really going down this path again?

mabye if family radio sells off 94.7 someone could buy it and return country to nyc on it

That actually makes sense; 94.7's signal targets a lot of New Jersey and can get a lot of suburban listeners.

WYNY at 97.1 FM was a good mix of currents and oldies in the late 1970s and early 80s. A couple of program directors who will go unnamed really dragged it down. If I remember correctly it just couldn't compete with WLTW and changed its format to country.

A very pop oriented country station would survive in NYC. Perhaps Cumulus will flip WPLJ when it gets the station.

Apparently it is. Some topics will never die. All the out of town country lovers love to insist country won't fail in NY over and over and over......

1. NYC is not getting a station that plays songs like, She thinks my tractor's sexy and International harvestor to name only 2 hokey titled songs.
2. Now that parts on northern NJ and Long Island have 2 new country stations the odds are actually less that NYC will get one since the areas in the market where country is more popular are already served.
3. The population of NY is even more ethnic than it was 10-15 years ago so there is an increasing number of the population who has no identification with the genre at all.

Can someone explain to me where the country station that reaches north nj is?
No I dont get anything on 106.3! 96.1 is unreadable. And WYNY and WHN are NOT back.

It is in Eatontown, NJ. Probably not much of a signal north of Edison. I don't know where you are but you cannot get 96.1 or 106.3, the 2 new country stations, near the city....106.3 would probably be listenable in southern Staten Island though.

Have you even listened to a country station recently? Yes, the two songs you mentioned do get played but the bulk of the music is either pop leaning or rock leaning. It's not "Hicksville USA" as you would have people believe. If I'm a "bottom feeder" station in the city, why not give it a shot. You'd need personalities like the ones on CBS-FM to make it fly. High personality, high energy, high fun radio station. People would be drawn to it. The two top candidates to program a station like this....Ed Hill and Scott Mahalack. Couldn't miss with the right marketing.

Or, maybe - dare I say it - Jim Kerr? He's done it before. Though I don't think you hear him on Q104.3's country radio HD sister station on 106.7-HD2... (He could yell out a tractor window and get more listeners than HD Radio...)

Which brings me to...

Don't forget "Redneck Yacht Club"! :D

Country today isn't what it was years ago. It's more mainstream. Lady Antebellum is a big Country group out now and their hit "I Need You Now" gets airplay on AC stations in addition to Country Stations. Here in Hartford LITE 100.5 added it to their playlist right after they flipped back to AC from their 6 week Christmas format. Other Country artists too have cross-overs - Shania Twain and Taylor Swift are others that I can think of.

Country stations are going up in the ratings. Country concerts are selling out. The only thing is - today's Country fans don't go out dancing like Country fans of days gone by. That's why The Club I work at switched from Country to Mixed Music about 6 or 7 years ago. But we keep everyone happy. Our mix is 35% Country to 65% non-country. Some line dance. Others dance freestyle. There is a smaller club about 10 miles from us that's all-Country and they're struggling. Always rumors of the place shutting down or being up for sale. And speaking of Line Dancing you might be surprised that the crowd that goes to my club line dance to other styles of music.

Here are just a few non-Country songs our crowd line dances to:

The Time (Dirty Bit) - Black Eyed Peas
Calle Ocho - Pit Bull
Right Round - Flo Rida
Boom Boom Pow - Black Eyed Peas
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N Roses
Sweet Child of Mine - Guns N Roses

We also have live bands on Fridays and Saturdays. Fridays bands are Rock, Classic Rock, and Top 40 based. Saturdays bands are Country based. Crowds on both nights don't care if we mix the music up and play some Country on Fridays during the band's intermissions and on Saturday if we play non-country during the band's intermission.

Doubt it... WPLJ is a heritage in NYC, I believe, and they probably won't bother flipping it ;)

101.9 or 94.7 would be good for country, most likely... but I'm betting 101.9 will become the home of WEPN-FM instead :p

'PLJ is profitable and has desirable demos. Cumulus won't touch it. 101.9 will likely be ESPN's future destination. 94.7? Not sure that one could be built out. I think it has signal issues with WPST at 94.5 and WMAS Springfield MA at 94.7. ???

If Cumulus takes over Citadel, as rumored, they will have WPLJ and WABC. Add New York move-in WFAS 103.9 to that small cluster.
One format that could be put on 'FAS that won't compete with the other two stations, or the other more powerful local signals is country. Sister station WFAF could extend the country programming into Northern Westchester, and parts of Nassau County and Connecticut.
Though the WFAS/WFAF signal would not have huge coverage, it would reach mostly areas that cannot receive My Country 96.1, Thunder Country 103.3/103.5, or sister Cumulus station Kicks 105.5.
Cumulus is already operating 2 country stations in the Hudson Valley, Kicks and The Wolf. So they apparently are comfortable with the format in this region.

Or you may have a choice of listen to other country stations besides 96.1 out on Long Island and 106.3 in East Township, NJ. Back in December, I listened to 106.3 on my walkman while driving towards Staten Island, but it comes in okay, but it's listenable in Brooklyn and surrounding areas in NYC due to the interference with other pirate stations elsewhere along with a new translator for 106.5 in NYC is in the works now for Christian's "K-Love" on the way, You can listen to country music on either satellite radio such as Sirius/XM or listen to country music online if you are not in the New York metro area, you should try WRWD and "The Wolf". I'll give you those two links, and these had nothing to do with New York radio.

http://www.wrwdfm.com
http://www.hudsonvalleycountry.com

These two will have streams to listen to your favorite country music online if you are not in NYC since you've already missed the days of WHN and WYNY from years ago. "The Wolf" also has the "90's at 9" which is heard during the Jack Hammer's "Morning Wolf Den" show where they played country music from the 90's just like the way it sounded from the old days of WYNY at 103.5 and 107.1 when it was part of the now defunct country quadcast known as "Y-107".

Those of you who can't get their country station on New York radio anymore will listen to either satellite radio or listen to these two online streams including WRWD and "The Wolf". That's it! You can make the choice.

:) 103.5 and Y107 both were such great music and Great personalities, a Family station!!! :) 103.7 loved to call and request "one friend" on Bill Rocks show :) I still love that song!!!
