There has been some chat about WYPL over the past few weeks. I was out at the main site today to re-install our RDS encoder, and the WYPL folks were kind enough to let me make a few audio suggestions while I was waving spectrum analyzers around.

Bottom line is that as of this evening (6/9/10) it is runnng in clean mono, and on my way out I carried the signal clear all the down past Clarksdale, MS. You might want to give it a re-listen.

Previously I had not had a chance to hear this station over a long period of time, but from my sampling today I found the programming to be not bad at all. I think you are lucky to have it as a choice. Palmer, you are right that the WYPL folks are as nice as can be, and they speak highly of the good grounding and other work that you are doing there.

Paul that's awesome! I enjoy and use WYPL often actually.

I like The Takeaway and Ch 5 simulcasts. Sometimes it's nice to hear the newspaper also while your driving.

The mono is not going to do much for the music but I would rather hear it in mono than with a hiss from the marginal signal. (not all radios have a mono button). I am lucky to have it on most on my tuners at home though. The modulation sounds much higher too.

I think this will help WYPL's signal in cars drastically. It gets was pretty noisy many days as of late with all the tropo we have these early summer mornings.

I'll check out the RDS in the car tomorrow. I actually hate the way my Pioneer deck handles RDS but it's nice to get some info when RDS is being offered.

It's pretty cool that someone actually took input given here on the board and ran with it.
 
The Memphis music show is a tribute to Dana Key which is on right now.

It's nice to hear a bunch of vinyl on the air. I guess WEVL is about the only place to hear that these days.
 
I love WEVL and listen to it whenever something interesting is on. And despite their poor choice of tower siting, I like WYPL too for the newscasts.

Unfortunately the radio in my car is shot and neither is strong enough to be useful in the metro. I have dipped into the world of HD with a portable Insignia that I keep in the car, but it's so prone to intermod that both stations are unlistenable. WEVL's TX site is in the most RF dense part of Memphis apparently because I don't get much from it anywhere anymore. WYPL actually comes in better in Senatobia than it does in Bartlett. :D

What's on the RDS now? Last time I was there it was present but everything was blank.
 
Have really spent quite a bit of time listening to WYPL since it's back on the 100k TX in Ark.

Signal is still noisy some morning especially with the tropo we get in the hot muggy south.
Turning off the stereo pilot has helped some in parts of town when the band is quiet.
The scratching isn't as loud in mono as when the pilot is on and you loose and regain stereo.

I am mostly listening to The Takaway, BBC World, and the TV 5 simulcasts.

Heard some interesting music last night when I ran an errand. Otha Turner and the Afrosippi Allstars. This was during a Memphis Music block.
I would have changed the station but what I heard was interesting.

Otha was the last well know fife player. He had music featured in the movie Gangs of New York.
