WYRD and WVOC stumble

Rush, love or hate, was IMO the glue that held conservative talk radio together and was the constant in a format that tends to vary from market to market outside of iHeart stations. In any midsized market, you could find him 12-3 on EST on a leading news/talk station and he was the draw. You expected to find him on a talker worth anything unless they were all local (rare and in bigger markets only) or a third or fourth rate talker like Salem has (WGTK is actually impressive for Salem). Similar situation with Coast to Coast AM but they have less loyal of a following.

Cumulus stations are getting Dan Bongino. Audacy is getting Dana Loesch. iHeart is going with Clay Travis/Buck Sexton. The most popular syndicated talk show will be gone with a lot of scattered replacements that are top-down dictations. IMO the loss of Rush (again, love or hate) is going to hurt almost any talk station that carried him as the talk audience is going to be so fragmented. The question is as time goes on, how will the format be affected? Is Audacy committed to Dana, so even if ratings are bad, they will keep her, for example? I feel like Bongino would have probably done a lot better on 106.3. Again, WORD is at their weakest point programming wise in years IMO and if Salem would be less cookie cutter and take this chance to head on compete with them I think they’d have a chance. They have Hannity who is very popular (#2 behind Rush I believe) and Gallagher who is somehow popular in this area. It’ll never happen, but I feel like a stronger morning show and going local for at least part of the 12-3 time slot on 94.5 would make WORD nervous. Not to mention a signal that blows 106.3 out of the water. Most Salem talkers don’t have much of a competitive chance due to being relegated to poor AM signals generally but 94.5 has a prime opportunity in a prime market on a blowtorch signal and could do a lot better if they would break it out of the typical Salem mold (which they have done to a certain extent by carrying shows like Sean Hannity).

My favorite talker was Neal Boortz from WSB but he has retired. But I can certainly appreciate the contribution of Rush Limbaugh to the recent success of AM radio. Although I did not altogether agree with his viewpoint or style that could sometimes be perceived as racist, elitist, or otherwise offensive. But nonetheless he was a very successful broadcaster which cannot be disputed. It will be interesting to see if another national replacement will eventually emerge, as apparently his time slot is being split by several different hosts among the major broadcast groups, as alluded above. I think Hannity is now the most famous national host, but he is in a later time slot, for now at least. And entirely too arrogant and abrasive for my tastes. But for some reason, Boortz never really aggravated me. Perhaps because he was more libertarian.

Boortz was interesting indeed. I do question in these days of polarization if a show similar to his would be viable. Every Cox talker carried him and he was also on a number of "secondary" talkers. Hannity does seem to be the leading talk show as far as affiliates now that Rush is going to be off the air and his audience and affiliates fragmented. I'm not a fan either, but WGTK is fortunate to have Hannity's show considering the rest of their lineup is largely unknown outside of the Salem orbit.

Dana Loesch to replace Rush at 106.3 and other Audacy talkers.
This is a very smart move by Audacy. They have pretty big conservative talk stations around the country. Rush was huge. He was, well... Rush. So now that he's gone, why give Premiere/iHeart or Cumulus any business? They find an independent syndicator and make a corporate deal. Is Dana Loesch any better than those other "replacements?" Maybe, maybe not. But you end up making more money from it by keeping more inventory for yourself. Ratings? We'll see.....

In GSP, nowhere. His standalone show never had an affiliate in the market either. 106.3 has Loesch and 94.5 is clearing Salem’s programming.
Any thoughts on what WBT will do? Some people might be able to get a signal from the AM.

I also wonder what WWNC will do. It's 5000 watts on the far left end of the dial.

Not sure about WBT, but WWNC is an iHeart station so I'm sure they will get the Buck Sexton/Clay Travis show when it launches.

Also, I assume WVOC will get Premiere's replacement for Buck Sexton's slot, Jesse Kelly, from 6-9.

WBT afternoon host Brett Winterble has been filling in during the former Rush time slot on the national broadcast, along with other rotating hosts. In Spartanburg you can get WBT on 99.3, although sometimes there is interference from WCON in Georgia since they increased power. But my home radio could still pick up 99.3 when I lived in Mauldin when I adjusted the rabbit ears. And also you can get WBT on 107.9-HD2. But it will be interesting to see if Radio One carries the new show with Buck Sexton and Clay Travis or makes some other choice. Although what Radio One wants to do with WBT long term is another key question, as this does not seem like the best fit for a more urban leaning broadcaster.

Just had to provide an update to this thread, WYRD/WORD remains in freefall as conspiracy ridden Tara seems to accept every conspiracy given to her as truth.

WVOC has bounced back to a 3,5 but to the radio station still feels pointless…I can’t believe that Gary David still has the gall to make of other media ourselves losses when he is a foot from the grave himself.

As insane as this sounds, WVOC seems more credible than WYRD.

WBT has decided to go with Live and Local rotating hosts for now. Still curious what Radio One will eventually do with this heritage legacy station. Still doesn't seem quite the right fit.

They'd be better off spinning it to another company, maybe a trade, for something that fits better in their portfolio. ....and likely in a market they are already in.

I'm not sure about the ownership caps, but iHeart and Beasley have no AM's in Charlotte and could acquire 1110. Beasley and Urban One overlap in Philadelphia and Detroit. WBT's best days are behind them IMO but there could still be some value in 1110. Urban One could keep 99.3 (iHM or Beasley couldn't take another FM) and simulcast 92.7 on it.
