WYRK contests

Are the contests on WYRK pre-recorded or what? Be the 9th caller to win, but we heard the same "caller" twice in the same week?

The posts on this board amaze me.

What do the callers to a WBEN talk show have to do with the callers winning a prize on WYRK? Absolutely nothing. I don't think WBEN even puts the caller for a prize on the air except on the Saturday morning edition of Buffalo's Early News.

Let me rephrase the original question:

Are the contests on WYRK pre-recorded or what? Be the 9th caller to win, but we heard the same "caller," and the same call, twice in the same week.

This leads me to believe one of two things. No one is actually winning anything, or when they do, instead of putting the caller on the air, they have pre-recorded calls.

A third "thing" that maybe, just maybe the same person won the contest both times. Those of us in the biz are well aware of "prize pigs".

You are likely confusing the actual contest with promotional announcements made promoting the fact that the contest gives away things.

This is part of the promote-execute-promote cycle for successful contests. Tell people what you are going to do, do it and tell people you did it.

This wasn't the same person winning the contest. This was the same exact call.

This is possible, but I'm not sure then why they would ask the listeners to call at that time.

In other words, not a "Suzzie won this week" and here's the call. But "Call now 867-5309," and then they put the 9th caller on the air. Or, the 9th caller from 3 days ago.

It sounds like WYRK runs across the board contests in which all Townsquare stations participate. One winner from the listeners of dozens (or more) of similarly formatted stations. Although the station makes mention of this, most listeners don't understand the concept that they're 'competing' for big prizes with listeners in other cities or states.

The average Country, Classic Rock or WBEN listener still uses a rotary landline phone
hoping to nab that 9th caller prize. Foreign words like "streaming" & "podcasts"
don't resonate...

You might be right for WBEN or classic rock, but recent studies say that the country audience is a lot more tech savvy than you might think.

Another stereotype. And it's wrong. My comment about Townsquare contest wasn't a put-down of country or its listeners. Research indicates Country listeners participate in the digital marketplace as much if not more than AC or CHR listeners. Country listeners just happen to be more loyal to their favorite station than most listeners to other formats. Another reason WYRK is consistently #1 Persons 12+ and just about every demo that matter$.

Agreed, Country doesn't necessarily mean ignorant.

Still, WYRK has no country competition and that inflates their ratings.
I don't have any data on the comprehension skills of the average
WYRK listener...

True. The assumption that country listeners are ignorant was false 20 years ago.

Another interesting fact is that Hispanics have the greatest percentage of smartphone ownership, and are very heavy users of all manner of smartphone apps, texting, video calling, etc. Their usage far exceeds that of the general market.

So much for stereotypes.
