WYSL AWARDED SECOND FREQUENCY BY F-C-C

From www.wysl1040.com

A two-way competition for a new AM dial spot was decided in favor of WYSL owner Radio Livingston Limited, the notification mailed by the FCC to WYSL on October 31 and which was received Saturday. A competing application filed by CLEO of Corpus Christi, TX, for a new station at Greece, NY was simultaneously dismissed. The new station will be licensed to Lakeville, NY, with 2500 watts of power day and night at 1220 on the AM dial. The formal application must be filed under the FCC's order no later than December 31.

Congratulations to Mr. Savage for his new station.

Presumably it won't be a simulcast of WYSL (since its coverage contour after dark and pre-sunrise will overlap WYSL's almost completely, and the daytime contour will only be a fraction of what WYSL already delivers), so is there any word yet on what the programming schedule will look like?

And what will the pattern be like, given that it'll have to protect stations in Cornwall and St. Catharines, Ontario, not to mention that big 1220 blowtorch out of Cleveland?

Savage Empire

The Savage Empire grows. He's slowly surrounding Rochester. What's next? Spencerport? Medina? The Mighty 'KB?

Interesting how in the past week WLVL/Lockport's Dick Greene has purchased WECK in Buffalo and now Bob Savage will have his 2nd Rochester metro station. 2 independent AM operators will soon have 2 AM's in their respective communities. This doesn't exactly usher in the end of corporate radio by any means, but it's very nice to see a couple of locally based broadcasters expand. Community-oriented radio is not dead by any means.

Best of luck to both of them.

By the way what's the new morning show on WYSL?

I was hoping it might be IMUS!

Robert Craig Savage, Esq. doesn't need Imus. Doesn't need the added expense and doesn't need the uncertainty of a 67 year old morning guy who's spinning his wheels, running his career on borrowed time under the scrutiny of the ever present posse of groups who will be monitoring Imus' every word.

Savage would be better off keeping mornings just the way they are. Live and local. If he further invests in talent in AM drive, there would be plenty of Rochester locals who would like to work for a local broadcaster who's as smart or smarter than any one of the men and/or women who run Entercom, CBS or Citadel and probably treats his employees a whole lot better.

Imus on WYSL? Pass!

Unlike some former employers I’ve worked for, Bob knows what he’s doing, plus I can personally attest to the fact that Bob does treat his employees very well.

Thank you all for the kind and supportive comments.

We're not sure what the final power will be for 1220. In the next couple of weeks we're going to be doing measurement radials on CHSC and first-adjacent WECK (closed circuit for Dick Greene - we're aiming at 50kw so we can implement HD! Just kidding, haw, haw!!) The initial proposal was for 2.5kw day & night, DA-2, diplexed on the WYSL 1040 array. That puts a 5 mv/m contour at about Maiden Lane in Greece and covers almost a million people. When new Tx & sample lines were installed for the 20kw upgrade the old lines were carefully preserved and additional control pairs were run to accomodate any "additional operation" when and if it occurred, so any new installation would not require new towers, new RF lines or any underground work. It would essentially consist of installing and setting up TX, phasor, ATUs and antiresonating networks.

WYSL morning show: we considered Imus and rejected him for the reasons you've listed here and more. Actually we had a previous experience with the I-man on 93.3 back in 1995-1996. As much as I personally enjoy Imus we found that he doesn't work very well in Rochester because the commute times are so short. The average is now about 15 minutes. Imus can be in news, long NYC spot clusters, sports and other stuff that you've got to cover on the network, for stretches consuming much of that elapsed time. So listeners tune in, don't hear any content, shrug and tune out.

WYSL did pick up Quinn and Rose in a response to a listener suggestion. Many of you may know that Jim Quinn (ex-WKBW, WIBG, WPIX-FM) is an old friend who was my morning guy at 13Q/Pittsburgh. They've been an excellent fit since we added the show in late October; LOTS of great response. We have retained plenty of local content - local news, weather, sports, traffic etc.

Again thanks to all for the glad tidings and for your interest in our stations.
