WYSL takes on Headline News

WYSL, a small radio station in Rochester, claims that the Memorial Day special edition of Robin & Co. was "purported to be a 'tribute' to US Armed Forces," but was actually a "thinly-disguised anti-Iraq war agitprop."

The only response WYSL is going to make to HLN's purported "outrage" at our criticism of its Memorial Day "tribute" - the irony of any CNN-affiliated organization, in alleging that a radio station which simulcasts CNN's own product is "politicizing" Iraq War coverage, is obvious to any reasonably objective observer. WYSL stands by its statements regarding the HLN Robin Meade Memorial Day coverage.

Savage...you wouldn't happen to be Bob Savage would you?

To be honest I only listen to WYSL in the car to listen to the WHEC simulcast as WYSL's conservative programming doesn't cater to me(WROC does) but WYSL has the right to drop programming it doesn't like. The only thing I would suggest to to WYSL was maybe to drop Headline News silently. The whole tiresome " biased left-wing media, biased right-wing" fight is so old and stirs nothing up but trouble.

Interestingly I liked both WYSL and Headline News a lot better when they had all news formats. Headline News airs a bunch of garbage these days...Nancy Grace anyone? and WYSL is channeling WHAM and the old WROC

Yes, absolutely I am Bob Savage. And we did cancel HLN "silently" as you say, but because of the Memorial Day segment we commented publicly on our website in the form of an apology to our listeners. Actually the HLN affiliation was pre-emptively cancelled last winter to avoid automatic renewal. WYSL maintains its stance that the CNN "tribute" was not what it purported to be and failed to meet the standards bar for programming on our station. You are correct in observing that as customers of CNN-HLN and its syndicator Westwood One, this is WYSL's call to make. We also received positive comments from our listeners, both for our comment on the Memorial Day programming and for our decision to cancel CNN. I will point out again that Headline News, instead of responding to our criticisms, has chosen to attack its radio affiliate WYSL for "politicizing" the Memorial Day coverage, a bizarre reaction given that they originated the material in the first place. We carried the blasted thing from start to finish. All we did was say on our website that we didn't like it, so it's hard to see how this is "politicizing."

WYSL did feature Associated Press All-News Radio until July 2005, but that service was discontinued nationally by AP at that time. We affiliated with HLN and other news sources in an attempt to reconstruct the all-news radio format but we ultimately weren't happy with the overall results. Thus came our decision to add national talkers like Laura Ingraham, O'Reilly, Rusty Humphries, Tammy Bruce and Dennis Miller, as well as local talker Bill Nojay weekdays. It's been a terrifically successful lineup.

Thank you Mr. Savage for cleaning up the situation for me. Forgive me as I had the notion from the report that someone was preaching about it from the top of Xerox Tower down all the way to Lake Shore with an echo traveling down the thurway. And thank you as explaining as to why WYSL changed; I never knew the AP news was discontinued nationally.

I am glad to know that Rochester has a reliable independent radio station that caters and cares about its listeners, especially this day in age of corporate media. Just don't stop simulcasting WHEC anytime soon, unless you guys start your own evening newscast. :)

I'm very curious as to what WYSL will do to fill the gaps in their programming when they drop CNN Headline News? Will there be more local news? Does ABC have newsbreaks available around the clock to fill the void? As for the station's talk show line up, I like Nojay because he concentrates on upstate issues. Laura and O'Reilly I can take or leave. Dennis Miller however is great to listen too. He's entertaining and informative.

Perhaps Don Ho-Imus could continue his rant on the Rutgers B-ball gals and serenade us with 'Tiny Bubbles' as well. Sharpton v. Imus...Can you think of two people you'd rather see draw in a fight to the death match.
I love to watch the left self-destruct just when you think they might have a chance to gain some staying power with just an ounce of common sense. Example: CNN/HN Tribute to the Troops
CNN will join poster children O'Donnell, Moore, Penn, et. al. in thoroughly alienating 70% of America in their efforts to prop up Clinton-Lite with tales of 911 conspiracy, man-made hurricanes, etc.
If our geniuses to the right of the aisle could get on America's side of the immigration issue, we could capture all 3 branches walking.
Gotta love O'Reilly, Ingraham, Miller and Savage.
Toodles CNN.
