WYSP MAKES ITS MOVE SOMETIME THIS WEEKEND

Just received the news, format change in order for WYSP-94.1 sometime this weekend, no later than Monday afternoon. The new format is going to shock radio geeks, its not what you all think. Roll Tape!!!!

The only thing that would "shock radio geeks" is if the signal converted to HD radio.

They can either drop WYSP and gun for MMR like the old days. Also keep in mind CBS needs a compatible format for their O&A morning show. And you ain't gonna park O&A on WIP.

Or they can do what Clear Channel should have done and switch one of their properties to country to compete with WXTU. Country on 94.1?

Although "US 106.1" has a nice ring to it...

Any chance they intend to target listeners who's IQ might be as high as, oh, let's say, double digits? That'd be about a tenfold increase compared to most of what they've been targeting the past decade or so.

It'll shock radio geeks? Hmmm. Quick! What are some predominant formats across the country that Philly doesn't have.

Let 'em roll.

Just about everything that's been tried here has failed except Rock, AC, and Urban.

Spanish is a flop, as is "Jammin' Gold" or whatever they call it now. And they won't do real oldies or standards. There isn't enough room here for two country stations, or another Soft AC. And no one seems to think that it'll be rock.

What's left?
Dance? I don't see that one comin' either.

If Philly is even thinking about changing to The Zone, then CBS Radio should start taking employees to the alley and shoot them at close range. I can almost hear Kidd Chris throw up in his own mouth upon hearing that news. The Zone is a failure in the same respect that CBS Radio's forray in FM Talk has been an abyssmal failure. Go back to rock music and quit being a bunch of uptight pansies.

Oh and if I have to read another CBS Radio executive claim that all rock listeners are using their iPods more than other formatted radio listeners, I will take that executive's iPod and shove it up their Dog Damn A**!

I'll take a guess, if it's going to be shocking that means they will not go back to rock. So my guess is they will flip to AC. They will call themselves FRESH and model the station after New York.

WBEB is a powehouse AC just like WLTW is and CBS will try to give them some competition. They will be brighter than WBEB (who's not nearly as soft as they used to be). They will try to convince the market that B is the sleepy soft station that plays songs like "You Light Up My Life".

The problem is that Philly has a long history of Hot ACs and warm ACs failing miserably. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if this is what their format choice is to replace FREE.

you may be onto something Jay. WBEB is relatively unchallenged. And, Fresh has shown strong potential for CBS in nearby NYC, and also looks like the type of thing CBS would want to plug into other appropriate spots around the Country.

I wouldn't say that "The B" is unchallenged. 95.7 is Philly's second AC Station, and I don't think that there's room for a third.

Don't forget - that's what people said about urban.

I tend not to underestimate the directionlessness of the people making these decisions anymore. Anything is possible.

They should just bring back the rock on 'YSP.. Too much heritage, too much history.. CBS just learned their lesson with the whole Free fiasco, hopefully, they leave WYSP alone and bring back the rock! I couldn't see that station as anything else.. and I think alot of folks feel the same way..

anyone else thinking KYW-FM

Nope. Not a chance. 1060 is the only really successful AM in the city. If you have a successful AM, you stick with it. It is viable to experiment with FM, but to do so with AM is suicide.

Hmmm, WYSP - losing it's identity after all these years. The problem is of late, "What identity?" It's had more flips than an omlette at the Ridge Family Diner in Roxborough. So, I'd say no to saving calls for savings sake. We're not talking KFRC, here.

Rosie O'Donnell all day - all night... No, that would suck.

Swahili Disco. No...I must be listening to too much Internet Radio.

Something fresh for Philadelphia.

Yes, that's it! Let's call it FRESH-FM! Let's do radio with that female lean! Young females, middle age females! Yes, that's it! "The Fresh Air of Philadelphia".

You GO CBS!!!

But, again, maybe not.

But, again, maybe so.

Be afraid ... be very very afraid... It's CBS on the loose. Anything could happen. As long as it's "Fresh" ...
