WYSP nosedive

I really hope this doesn't turn into a flame, but....

There is alot of talk about WYSP's audience level after Howard leaves for Satellite Radio. Right now WYSP is supposed to be the Active Rocker in town, vs. the Mainstream Rock of WMMR. 'YSP plays nothing unusual in the way of it's rock selection, but I was wondering about it's programming. It's not as if WYSP sucks radio's balls. At night they go harder and they do rock. Won't the music hold them together? As far as their jocks are concerned, IMHO, Tommy conwell is nothing more than a local favorite from his heyday, he isn't all that great of a dj. Monkeyboy and Jackie Bam-Bam are not all that bad. I am happy to hear Frank Lario back on air, and Couzin Ed....is....well, so so. But it's the music that matters, and I had the impression that WYSP plays or at least repeates the music that people want to hear.

I mentioned this before, I think YSP is going harder and playing a wider selection. "BUT" I do not care for the Couzin Ed/Tanya thing, it was so nice when they were off for a week or so, but now the phoney stuff is starting again. The music should carry them, they play the best rock, they should add some newer stuff though, the only new music is Staind, Breaking Benjamin, CKY and a few others. Frank Lario, Monkey Boy and the weekend jocks sound great and should be given full time slots, I do not know what Kid Chris is going to do when he comes on board. Also, the Eagles are being mentioned constantly with live reports and other interference taking away from the music flow. It would be nice for the Eagles to move over to WOGL, WOGL has a greater coverage area than WYSP. To break it down, remove Ed, Tanya the phoney male hormone stuff and the Eagles and just rock...Just my two cents...please no flames.

I have been saying for some time now that I think the Couzin Ed Tanya tandem will be the new morning show once Stern departs (Could not come soon enough, I am sick of his "get me off" rants), Also I would like to see Frank get a full time gig, maybe the 3-7 slot. I am not sure where everyone is hearing Kid Chris is coming on board?

Or move the Eagles to either WIP or WPHT. AM radio is the natural home for sports. Although WIP is a 5,000 watt station, its low dial position (610) gives it a nice, strong signal. WIP is nondirectional during the day, further helping the coverage of Philly and its suburbs. Its sports format blends well with coverage of Eagles games. WPHT is a 50,000 watt nondirectional station. As such, it would also be a good home for the Eagles.

The flagships for NFL teams are almost exclusively on FM. ( Skins on WJFK-FM, Steelers on WDVE-FM) The exceptions may be the two NY teams who are on FAN and ABC respectively

WIP is not nondirectional....according to my FCC database viewer.

They are a 2 tower DA-1 with major lobes going NW-SE.

It would be interesting to have the Eagles back on WIP, where I grew up with them when WIP was playing music. Somehow, all of the Eagles games, talk shows, etc., didn't seem to bother anyone I knew who listened to WIP, but on WYSP there's an interesting backlash that it interrupts the music.

I'm not sure I agree that AM is the natural home to sports. The games sound great on WYSP, and when I've heard segments of games on other FM stations while traveling, I find the same to be true.

Correct... from their two tower, stand alone, top netted antennas right off of 42 on 295 south they send their signal NW-SE 24/7/365. The funny thing is if you go just a bit Northeast when in New Jersey they start to fade but going NW and SE they are extremely strong. What is the purpose of the nets on the tower tops anyway?

I believe that is the buzz around 5th and Market, Kid Chris coming on board soon, also, Larry King mentioned it last week on his CNN nightly talk show.

Actually one Kidd Chris's fans called in Larry King's show and asked the guests (who I believe were people talking about cancer) what they thought about Kidd Chris coming to Philly. King and the guests had no idea what the guy was talking about, or who Kidd Chris is for that matter. Calling into a "serious" show, getting on the air, then using the time to mention a radio/TV personality is a gag that has been around for awhile, but Stern's fans perfected it.

The "nets" are what we call capacity hats inthe radio engineering world. WIP's towers are 68 electrical degrees tall at 610 kHz. The capacity hat acts like a loading coil to increase the electrical height to 90 degrees, thereby increasing radiation efficiency. On the subject of WIP's signal going down as you travel northeast, he northeasterly null protects WGIR Manchester NH and WSNG Torrington CT, both also on 610.
