WYSP to drop FreeFM moniker

WYSP will drop the FreeFM moniker in the very near future. There is no format change associated with it - as of yet. The station will simply revert back to the wysp.com and 94wysp.com domains and pretty much wipe itself clean of the 'brand.'

Not sure if this means that other FreeFM branded stations will do the same but it's a good possibility.

(I understand there has been a good deal of untrue speculation on the fate of the station as of late. Take it for what it's worth, but it's a guarantee.)

On-air, they've slowly lessened the use of Free-FM. I say good riddance. The mass Free-Fming was as bad as the CBS mandate- why take away a station's identity for corporate symmetry? CLEARLY the name did nothing for ratings. I like the talk (yes, I'm one of the five) so hopefully this will bring about a change to the identity that will SOMEHOW get listeners (stretch much?). I just read on FMQB that the imaging/promotions guy just went to WHAT, so maybe that will help too.

Luckily I already got my Free-FM WYSP keychain bottle opener.

Any hint as to where this info was obtained?

I don't know how to edit posts. There, I said it.

Anyway, here are some comments from Huggy on the WYSP Underbelly Chatter boards, located at freefmboard.com

on the possibility of a line-up shake-up:

"i think our show would be the first to go...since upper management is not a fan. Gil was a friend to the show and with him gone...I dont trust some of these peeps."

on the station as a whole, and the future:

"we'd have a nice severance because we've been there so long...but whenever new guys come in they always say the same thing, "we're not gonna change a thing" and then they change everything. Honestly, I dont think the station is gonna flip formats, I do believe it will stay talk, however, after that who knows what's gonna happen. Gil took a lot of heat on the air but he was a good guy who supported his shows. Most of the Free Fms across the country have been abysmal failures. However, the Philly one, although it has struggled at times, shows the most potential for succeeding. Let's hope they dont f[edited]k with it."

From sources within the corporation. This should happen this week at some point.

This morning I noticed the 'FREE FM' has been dropped from their RDS Station ID. It just flashes 94.1 WYSP now.

Exploring the depths of the internets, i came upon www.myspace.com/wysp and discovered this comment by a "Johnny B" that was made on Friday-

"were not FREE FM anymore :p lol guess you'll change that when we get our new logo.. i'm excited LOL 94.1 WYSP!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Looking at "Johnny B"'s profile, theres no real description of his job, but his calendar does include...

WYSP Loveline Board Opp @ WYSP Studio
Jun 21 2007 12:00P

oooh new logo.

How come i rarely see the modify post button?

ANYWAY, i noticed that during the into to the last break of M&H, Huggy didn't ID the station, and in closing the show he referred to the station only as WYSP

aaand i think the website is down. 94WYSP.com and 941freefm.com.

No the freefm website is up i just checked

:)

For WYSPS old format check out

http://www.wysp.com

I saw this a couple weeks ago searching on Google. I'm confused as to why it even exists. It says that it's run by the current MD of Free-FM - in which case, why would he be running a spin-off site and stream with the old logo? Is it an actual simulcast of their HD-2 programming, or is it a "keep the music alive" site like Y100rocks.com was?

I think neither, because I don't think YSP is in HD yet.

CBS still owns and runs WYSP.com. There's even a link to it on the bottom of the main page, http://www.941freefm.com. But the content, at least for now, is only on the web. According to HDRadio.com, the HD-2 is coming soon (though, according to them the main station is "Active Rock," so what do they know).

Well, I haven't heard "Talk that Rocks" all day in promos or used by hosts (and M&H and S&A dropped it along with 94-1 WYSP EVERY TIME into/out of breaks) so it appears that has been eliminated.

I also noticed a new hourly ID:

"WYSP Philadelphia, This is...94-1 WYSP"

the previous ID said something along the lines of "WYSP Philadelphia, Talk That Rocks (echo), 94-1 WYSP, Free FM (noticably lower)"

I'm just amped for the apparrent new logo.

Any new updates ????
As stated in the previous post, most if not all of the references to the brand have been removed. There might be a few lingering here and there in some commercial campaigns that have not ended.

The current website domain will be dropped, but that might happen until early next week now.

Do you know if they'll use 94wysp.com or do they have their hands on 941wysp.com?

It will be a bit confusing if 94wysp.com is the site for the talk station, and wysp.com is the site for the internet music station. Too many people will go to wysp.com, not completely remembering the address as given on the air, and won't see anything about the talk hosts.

I think they should redirect wysp.com to the main site and just put the music station as a more prominent link from there.

Something interesting I heard, the new "new music" bumper refers to the station as "94WYSP". Are they reverting all the way back?

now for some info, what was WYSP like during their talk period? When was it, late 90's early 00's? Who was on (I know they had O&A and D&M)? When did they do music? Did this all end because of the Sex for Sam incident or was it ratings? Thanks.

They were talk from 6a-7p from about the middle of '01 until Sex for Sam in August of '02. Stern 6a-11a, D&M 11a-3p, O&A 3p-7p. They aired music at night and on weekends when there wasn't Eagles programming. When O&A were fired, D&M moved back to afternoons ("back" on their former affiliates, to afternoons for the first time on WYSP), where they stayed for two ratings books. They were number 1 in men 18-49 in the first book, but in the second book, when they weren't Tim Sabean fired them, which he couldn't wait to do (apparently because they didn't fit a rock format - he just didn't like the show). During those two books, WYSP ran music in middays.
