WYSP To Rebrand As 94.1 The Zone?

In my best Randy Jackson voice:

Yo, dawg, check it out.

In Rochester, there is a station known as 94.1 The Zone, which was recently sold from CBS Radio to Entercom, and is in fact currently pending a sale from Entercom.

Meanwhile, WYSP is seeking to drop its "Free-FM" identity and likely rebrand itself to a format retaining Opie & Anthony in the morning, and rock, talk and God knows what the rest of the day.

Look no further than down the Turnpike in Pittsburgh, where CBS recently flipped to an all-talk format, though not as "Free-FM", but as "The Zone".

Meanwhile, notice that you can access WZNE's website via thezone941.com, but recently, not via 941thezone.com, which is still owned by "Infinity Broadcasting".

Stand back, because 94.1 is about to blow WYSP out of the box, dawg.

Free FM was not that bad of an idea. It's working in a few Markets. Though, if you notice the one's it didn't work are TALK RICH cities who already have progressive ( i don't mean politically, more like HIP ) thinking hosts or stations in their market. That & I'd be curious to see what the marketing campaign was like in each individual market?

I guess I must be the only one who enjoys this free fm talk format. Although, I have friends who are loyal listeners to it from the minute Opie and Anthony start through barsky and matt and huggy and then turn it off right after kidd chris is done. My job doesnt allow me to listen that much, but I listen when I can, and I hope it stays on the air, it's a breath of fresh air in a musically stale city.

Which markets is it working in? FREE either does bad or really bad depending on the market.

The whole "hot talk" format in general has been minorly successful for CBS' stations in L.A. and Detroit before they were branded "Free". So these probably aren't part of the equation.

The "hot talk" format will enjoy success later on down the road when pay-for-radio (satellite) is dead and buried. It's just about timing right now.
