WYSP's identity crisis

I noticed that on Monday, the station was being called "94-1 WYSP" by all the hosts (right now Huggy went into and came out of break with "94-1 WYSP, talk that rocks) with any new voicework (while still referring to the station as "Free FM") calling the station "94-1 WYSP, Talk that rocks". This is the THIRD name that theyre going by since they became FREE, starting out being "94-1, FREE FM WYSP", then up until now "FREE FM, 94-1 WYSP". Kidd Chris also directed listeners to 941WYSP.com at one point, then saying "that links not up yet". He also referenced at meeting about the topic of the name of the station.

It's sad that the concept of a name is being handled so sloppily. I think that they have a solid line-up*, and that they should have stuck with the 94 WYSP once they changed, but they had no say in Infinity's schemeing. I do like the "Talk that rocks" tagline they (along with WFNY) are using, a play on the station's former lives as rockers.

*Everyone but Scotty and Alex. God-awful. They need to pipe in Ron & Fez.

no i think ron and fez would rock here. i used to listen to them like in 2001 when wysp and O&a and the whole ting was going on then . i love ron and fex and miss them . wnew had the best line up ever . ferrall mornings don and mike . opie and anthony . then ron and fex . damn radio was good then . right now 2 me kidd chris is the best show out there . O&A are not the same show they used to be and [EDIT]. mat and huggie arent that great either . . id give me right arm for ( hot hits ) back .

[EDIT-vulgar]

I used to love this station... I think the all talk is a big mistake... You need talent (no offense to the folks on I'm sure they try) Why can't they just go back to playing great Rock n Roll.. When you have a heritage station like WYSP (and WNEW for that matter) and blow them up for something new... it just doesn't work, you wipe away 30 years of historyy and give people no reason for loyalty... Just an opinion here...

they should bring it back to the way it was a feww years ago, anything from the 70's-Now

you people just don't give it up do you . WYSP will never play all rock music again!!! within the next few weeks or a few month WYSP will be all talk 24/7 !!!. and I just love it.. rock music sucks big time!!!!and now 94.1 wysp is a great station.and its just going to get better .when the weekends are all talk. if you want rock music get Sirius then you will have all the rock music you want. you don't hear me crying wogl don't play 50's and 60's and more.NO I have Sirius and I get all the 50's music I want. WYSP will be all talk this time next year trust me !!!!

It's interesting because the latest rumors out of New York are that the Free FM format may not make it through the summer. The most recent flap to affect CBS Radio involved a skit on the JV & Elvis show where they called a Chinese restaurant and made some 'jokes' at the expense of the workers there. This was not well received, complaints ensued and these guys are suspended without pay until further notice.

So, since you can't offend anyone anymore - ever - it is difficult for Free FM to retain its edge and there is talk in NY that the format may not stay around. Not to mention the continued lackluster ratings that all of CBS' Free FM stations continue to garner.

If that happened, then all bets are off when it comes to WYSP. At the moment, it is CBS that provides the content. However, if CBS pulls the plug on the format - then we may actually see rock music return to WYSP. And, that's despite their recent moves to push it off the dial.

Personally, I'd welcome the change. I think the Free FM format was ill advised and poorly implemented everywhere, including here. An active rock format would see this station's ratings double within a week.

To continue i can't believe that CBS would even attempt this once again in NY, especially when it failed on WNEW. With that said, i would love to see the return of both YSP and K-Rock, pre- BEST Rock Period. YSP was all i would listen to from the entrance of The NJ Turnpike to Kent County Maryland on my trip to Preston. The best edgy Rock station on the dial, free fm doesn't rock, neither does talk. This latest attempt at adjusting the station id, is a desperate attempt at keeping the rockers from flipping the dial, but i believe they are loooong gone, May the rating at both YSP and FNY- which symbolizes what CBS thinks of NY, continue to drop.

Why should fans of Rock have to be the ones that spring for the rather steep price of an iPod? I would consider getting one but my computer doesn't have the capabilities to fully utilize it (i.e. no disc drive). Why shouldn't it be children with very disposible incomes or affluent soccer moms - why do we need so many stations in both NYC and Philly courting these audiences? A lot of current Rock music isn't exactly happy-go-lucky - you think people wealthy enough to afford an iPod and a fully operational computer are listening to the popular darker bands out there (and no, My Chemical Romance doesn't count as a "dark" band)? I think most fans of Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode are not exactly saying "Hello, flowers. Hello, car. Hello, tollbooth. Hello, parking meter. Hello, coffee" and whistling a happy tune every day - they're unhappy about something currently going on in their lives. People that are set financially usually listen to carefree bumfluff like Avril Lavigne and Black Eyed Peas.

Look at CBS's cluster in NYC. Free and Jack both rate and bill extremely poorly. Fresh has improved slightly over its predecessor but not by much to be of any significance. WFAN's ratings will no doubt be affected by the foolish decision to fire Don Imus - I wish them luck in finding a suitable replacement, they're going to need it. You mean to tell me that an Active or Alternative Rock station would not perform better than any of the FM stations that CBS currently runs? K-Rock was a pitiful excuse for a Rocker but people listened anyway, so that should tell you something. Free targets young males, the ones that left after K-Rock tried to go all Trucker Rock on us - needless to say, those listeners never returned. Jack and Fresh are going after different Females, but chances are they're already listening to 106.7, PLJ or Z-100. CBS should realize that Clear Channel has the Female listener locked between their stations and should attempt a different approach - maybe Classic Hits on one station, Active/Alternative on another and Old School Hip-Hop on another. I guarantee that all of these stations would perform better than what they have now. I don't expect CBS to get it right - they haven't for years now.
