WZMY TV SHUTTING DOWN 12-31-2010

According to their wikipedia page due to financial pressures new age media will be shutting down wzmy tv at the end of the year leaving boston without a my network tv affiliate

First independent/CBS WNHT-TV channel 21 failed and now independent/MY channel 50. How is WNEU-TV (TEL) channel 60 of Merrimack, NH fairing these days? ???

I think I'd want to see something more than an unsourced, anonymous Wikipedia edit (claiming that an announcement was made either in "August 2010" or "July 2009," depending on which edit you believe) before I'd put much credence in this story...

No kidding. Also, there hasn't been anything about it in the local media. One of the few TV stations here in New Hampshire going away would be major news, I'd think.

If true there are many viewers in the central-south region of the Boston market that can get MyTv outo fo Providence on 64.2. Personally, the loss of MyTV network is nothing great.

A Wikipedia editor whom I know to be active in TV stations reverted the edit. But it lasted 7 hours...perhaps 7 hours too long.

(Disclosure: I, too, edit Wikipedia; my edits mostly are adding print sources to things about the New World stuff in 1994, schools in Arizona, and odds and ends. I've found some interesting stuff in there as well.)

well wikipedia has changed it i saw no evidence of them shutting down !!

I think someone has an axe to grind with WZMY-TV. With Wikipedia, you get what you pay for. ;) I don't think WZMY is going anywhere. I do wish they would revert back to a full time Indie, instead of the MyTV stuff. Now that "network" really doesn't have anything much to offer. Bring back the "Weather with Al".

Someone there already reverted the article back to where it was. Unless there's a link to a reliable source included in the article, don;t always believe in what it says.

I noticed that WZMY is becoming a major production house in the Boston market with their "MyTV New England Studios". You can't say they aren't trying! Sure, the MyTV Network itself is really not much to write about. But from what I see though, WZMY is making a name for themselves in addition to their main mission as a local TV station. It would make sense. The station is close enough for Boston, but I'm sure the studio time is much cheaper being north of the border. More power to them.

Another Local Station could buy it.

It would make more sense for them to LMA the station to another operator... say Hearst or Fox or maybe even Sunbeam. Fox would make more sense since they are a My affiliate.

The three words that strike fear into the hearts of many men seeking the truth...

"According to Wikipedia." ::)

WZMY-TV is not shutting down on December 31st (or any time). On January 1st , 2010, New Age Media took over the daily operations of the station. While ShootingStar TV is still the licensee, New Age is managing the station. During 2010 a sub-channel (NBC/Universal Sports) was added, the station initiated HD broadcasting, and several live, regional sporting events were broadcast.

In 2011 we plan to offer more live sporting events. The first schedule broadcast will be in late February with a UNH basketball game against Hartford. Our MyTV New England Studios is working with local producers to offer branded entertainment created in New England. We currently have a dozen locally-produced programs, including Quiet Desperation, a reality-sitcom produced in Allston. We will be adding 30 Rock in Prime Access in the fall of 2011.

We are discussing additional sub-channels with several national entities. If those come to fruition we could be making an announcement this winter and launching as soon as springtime.

Finally, we are having conversations about increasing the HD content we air. Currently Primetime programming is the only true, HD content we offer. With an increasing amount of the syndicated programming now being offered in some form of HD, we are looking at systems that will allow us to store and play HD content.

Hope this clears up any questions about WZMY-TV!

Doug any chance of dropping the my network tv affiliation?

Why would they want to do that? It’s probably the most dependable source of income for them.

Thank you for clearing up that issue Doug! It's a shame that one irresponsible post on the internet can wreak such havoc, but that's the world we live in now.

The very best to you and to your staff at WZMY and your other stations for a happy and successful 2011!

Doug: Please consider bringing back a candlepin bowling show. Thank you.

Hi,
I'm not sure that ending our relationship with My Network TV would be either beneficial, or have a significant impact on us. They provide 10 hours of programming each week which we would have to replace. The question is, what would we put in its place? I think the answer is programming that is very similar to what My Network TV offers. As you may remember, they started life with primetime soap operas (their telenovellas). That was replaced in year #2 by a lot of mixed martial arts fighting. In year #3 they moved to reality programming (JAILl...from the producers of COPS). Last year when they decided to abandon first-run programming, the off-net syndication they offered was of higher quality than anything they had previously run, it was credible to both viewers and advertisers, and got some of the highest ratings My Network TV has ever achieved. All-in-all, it seems like a good move. Technically, My Network TV is no longer a network. They are a program supplier with whom we have a contract for 10 hours of programming each week.

I believe that the Fox owned-and-operated My Network TV stations are doing better than ever so I doubt that News Corp. will abandon the "network."

Just out of curiosity, if My Network TV were to disappear, what would you want to see in its place?

At this point we have five years of branding ourselves as MyTV New England. In many ways, that may be more valuable than the actual My Network TV programming. In a 200+ channel world, clearly-defined brands have a big advantage (Rupert Murdoch made that observation about 15 years ago at a Fox affiliate convention...he predicted that the future of local television would be in the carriage of live sporting events and highly-branded content).

Our carriage of My Network TV programming is no longer a liability. Our continued development of locally-produced programming will, hopefully, contribute to our brand and provide us with unique and exclusive content. We may not be able to beat WCVB at their game, but we can certainly be successful if we establish our own personae and focus on that!

Happy New Year,
Doug
