WZON going away from all sports

Loss of U Maine sports, layoffs, etc. are what's citied in the BDN article, nothing confirmed from Zone Radio's end.

http://new.bangordailynews.com/2010/10/18/sports/wzon-is-making-a-lineup-change/

So that leaves ONE ESPN affiliate in the state (little WSYY in Millinocket, if that station is still on and not simulcasting it's FM sister, it's listed as an affiliate)

That leaves the entire sports radio audience to WAEI/97.1. Hopefully Blueberry can take advantage of it.

Kind of a shame. I mean, I guess it makes sense (can you make money selling HS sports in Bangor, a college town?) but I'm not so sure libtalk is going to do any better. This move may be more about Mr. King's personal politics than anything else.

At least ZON isn't losing their local live sports broadcasts. They're very good at those.

This is very sad news. The upside is we won't be subjected to Colin Cowherd anymore.

Also, kudos to Jeff Solari for his candid comments.

It would not surprise me if even local sports gets phased out after a time too.

local sports will be gone the minute the flip happens, i doubt the sales crew is trying to sell high school basketball with the format flip happening by November. 103.1 flipped to prog talk and all localness was killed, the only thing they kept (and i bet the same will happen with WZON AM) is the contracted stuff like Red Sox and whatever else they have inked (i.e. Westwood One football)

You may be right. And that;d be a shame, since they were probably the best station in Maine when it came to local sporting event coverage.

it's also worth noting that last year WZON 620 was simulcasted on 103.1 WDME/WZON-FM for several months before the left wing talk format began. Now it's reversing, and from the way the article was written, it sounds like internal fighting amongst the Zoners between the sports guys (Duff and co.) and the Kings

OK. The way it's described sounds more like a train wreck. What are we? Sports? Sports talk? Progressive talk?

When they're ready to make it a full service AM or an oldies station, let me know.

This is exactly what WSKW 1160 in Skowhegan did last year....they had been ESPN full time with local sports, Red Sox a few years ago and NASCAR races. Then they pulled the plug leaving only the local sports and put on an oldies format with a local guy in the morning (with CBS news at the TOH) and a locally programmed jukebox the rest of the time, with a couple of syndicated shows on the weekend.

AM only radio is a tough sell these days, especially in rural Maine, unless you have an FM stick.
