Don't know if anyone was paying attention today, but 960 was laying a BIG signal toward Charlotte...2000+ mv\m at 1 km...in layman's terms, the equivalent of roughly 50kw. We're doing the day pattern tune up now.

Gary, you are one busy guy 610, 960 and 1220? We'll have to start calling you Mr AM!

I can not pick them up at all today. Are they having transmission troubles? I commute from the Lake Norman area down to the University area of Charlotte and at least usually get a very weak signal from them. But nothing in the car today. What gives?

Mike,

You left out one I'll tell you more about soon...WZRH was indeed off for a while today. We were working on setting the ATU networks for the night pattern, and that took quite a while. It'll be on regularly for a while at various power levels and patterns as we do the proofs for both patterns. I really enjoy those ole AM's!

Hey Hattaway! Do any of these AM projects involve Mr. Culpepper? If so, you know they are top notch and will perform at their peak performance!!! ;D

Yep...William's doing work for WKMT. He also did\is doing the work for Art Sutton on 870. Tom Jones' firm (Jim Sadler) did the 960 applications. Don Crain did the tune up on 960. The tuning's finished now, we gotta do proofs on both patterns, and a few more non-d measurements.
William has been a great friend for many years, and you're right- if he has anything to do with a project, one can be sure it's right.

I can't wait to see what Art Sutton has in store for us on 870. If that's the other one you are working on....that's great! I emailed Art awhile back to get some kind of idea what he was going to do with 870. He didn't tip his hand but he was nice enough to reply. I wish him luck. Start ups are fun to be in on and make happen! I'm not sure that's true when it's your money going into it though.

I have heard some rumblings about an existing AM station here in Charlotte that might make some changes but it's not confirmed, just a rumor. Even if it was confirmed I couldn't talk about it!

I'm playing in the FM band these days but I like the old AM's too!

Mike,

I don't know Art personally, but William Culpepper speaks very highly of him, and that's good enough for me. I too am curious to see what finally becomes of the 870 signal. 870 was one of my hometown stations many years ago when Fred Whitley owned it, and even then it's 1kw signal covered a LOT of territory. I do know a little more than I'm telling, but you know how radio goes... I know a little something about the changes at the station you're hinting at also- don't blame them a bit.

Thanks for the confirmation on the rumor about the station I was hinting at. I didn't know if it was true or just someones wishful thinking! I hope they do something different with it. Maybe I should ask my source if I can get in on it.

As for the old WGTL 870 yes that station had a fantastic signal! I saw the outside as I drove by but never had sense enough to go in and take a look. Too late now. :( I liked WGTL it was different in a sea of sameness.

I wonder if the new 870's signal will be as good as old WGTL's was?

As for Art Sutton he checks in here so naturally I gotta say something nice ;D. Really though it's great that he takes an interest in more than just the $$$. From what I have read about his stations are in small markets that reflect their communities, very local. Sounds good to me!

Mike,

The 870 signal is gonna be big in Charlotte. Art just filed for a modification of construction permit that moves the transmitter site to just North of the intersection of I-85 and Hwy 16, with 6 kw non-d daytime. That frequency is so quiet that 6kw will cover a lot of area. Now if we only knew what it was gonna be......

Well I know what I'd like to do...But as far as knowing how to make money with it I have no idea. Times have changed so much and the Charlotte audience is tough to figure out.

While I was at WBT I got the feeling that the station was more popular well outside of Charlotte than it was in Charlotte. I always got lots of calls from up and down the east coast at night.
