WZRK 1550

I heard WZRK 1550 this morning, called Avenue 1550, from Lake Geneva, WI, in Southeastern Michigan. It was during the critical hours. In the absence of CBE, this is the clearest station I have heard on the frequency. I remember hearing this station back in the late 1960s when it was WMIR.

1kw aimed right at you (rather tight east-west pattern). The question is how much longer will it be on. Supposedly this is moving to Northbrook, IL. I doubt, however, that will actually happen.

"WMIR"....Ah yes, World's Most Ignored Radio. I worked there for several months in the 70s....so I can personally vouch for that!

I also used to hear 1 kW WAWA 1590 also which was beamed east with 5 kW equivalent in the major lobe. And 250 watt WGLB, whose pattern I'm not sure what was like in the 1960s. WAWA was fairly regular in Michigan.

One frequency I wish I had paid more attention to on my visits to the O'Hare/Chicago area was 1420. I heard an R & B station and I thought it was just a daypart on WIMS. But WAMM, now WFLT 1420 Flint, MI, at just 500 watts, has a pattern whose maximum is at 310 degrees and exceeds 1 kW equivalent in the WSW direction toward Chicago. I also think I heard WPON 1460 Pontiac there one evening before pattern change, and WILS 1320 Lansing and WKMI 1360 Kalamazoo were frequently heard there off their equal major and minor back lobes. WILS's back lobe is smaller and more southerly now.

Used to catch WILS here on this side of the lake on a regular nighttime basis. It's probably been 20-30 years, however.

From the outside looking in (so to speak), I found this item in the WZRK application: "WCSJ-AM 1550 kHz Morris, Illinois will cease broadcast on 1550 kHz at Morris prior to the commencement of Program Test Authority Operation of WZRK at Northbrook, Illinois. The WCSJ 1550 kHz facility will, prior to Program Test of the New WZRK Northbrook facility, either 1) have it’s license modified to a frequency and power that creates no prohibitive overlap with the New WZRK facility or, 2) cease broadcasting and have the FCC delete the WCSJ AM license."

Sure enough, WCSJ is apparently moving to Roanoke IL (in the Bloomington area, sort of), clearing the way for the WZRK move to Northbrook. The FCC approved that application last month so maybe WZRK is still interested in doing the deal (emphasis on the "maybe" part).

Saturday, I was hearing many stations that are normally weak or non-existant in my area, during the day. Maybe this will be a good DX season.

I worked at "Mirror Radio" in the early to mid 80s.

Through the 70s & 80s WMIR was so much like so many other small-town stations searching for an identity.
