WZTI Testing (& other notes)

11/16/26 @ Noon(ish)- WZTI testing w/ simulcast of WRJN. Sounded pretty good down here (7 miles north of the WI/IL border). At 12:28 they went off the air; I notice they are back on now.

Unrelated, last week for a few days WGKB 1510 was actually listenable (though not great). Their signal is usually barely above the noise level here. Were they doing transmitter maintenance? Signal is right back where it was now.

The audio quality of 1290 seems to be much better than it was previously. As far as 1510, that's off the air or at flea power more than it's ever on. But the 101.7 translator is always on the air. Funny how that works. I guess they figure nobody is going to notice 1510 is on or not.

WGKB downsized a few years ago. They got rid of a few towers and are now 250 watts daytime only from a single tower in Waukesha. They rely on the FM translator and don't put much effort into 1510 AM.

Yes...licensed 250 watts now but many times it's been completely off for extended periods of time, or it's on so weak you can't even hear it in New Berlin or Muskego. Of course 1510 only exists for the translator, but it shouldn't be that hard to keep a 250 watt daytimer on the air.

Just tuned in to 1290, and the new transmitter does sound great. Only problem is, they're obviously sending a stereo signal to it, but only the right channel is going out over the air. Initially, I didn't recall "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield having such a long intro, then I realized that most of the vocals are in the left channel. But I'm sure Civic Media is good at correcting these kinds of problems quickly, unlike MRA.

Yes Civic Media and Magnum Media both are truly the best in the business, and they are very educational, and they are very great with newcomers in the radio industry.

When it comes to engineering both Magnum Media and Civic Media have published so much educational material and the projects that are being done behind the scenes are insanely creative and innvoative.

Chris Tarr always has amazing engineering projects.

I found Chris Tarr in Fond Du Lac restoring 103.1 W276CO - and right now it is broadcasting WSJY all the way in Fond Du Lac Wisconsin.

But seriously if you email Civic Media to let them know - they will absolutely address it quickly, Magnum Media is also very quick to resolve any issues as long as you email them.

If at all possible - I found that it makes the engineers job easier if you provide audio, video or signal readings in your email when you email them with an issue.
