WZUM 1590

WZUM was "shoehorned in" on the frequency, protecting 1590 Akron as well as 1580 Waynesburg and
1600 Wheeling. Waynesburg having moved to 1210, there might be a little wiggle room, but rebuilding
the towers probably would cost more than the station is worth. If Crafton is smart, they will take the
towers down carefully and sell them to another broadcaster.

I heard they wanted to eventually use that area for ball fields or something, but then again a year of nonpayment on a lease and liability would force them to just remove it all to protect themselves from something happening.

If they end up removing the towers and being that they will end up using public funds knocking them down and scrapping to recoup costs will be the only way I see them going. The labor alone to dismantle and time to resell may not mean anything to them since they haven't gotten paid.

I estimate that after tearing down the towers, and removing the ground system, that its going to cost them a pretty penny. Plus the have to pay the owner something for the towers, buildings etc.

I guess the lesson is to have a local right-wing host on there every day ripping into the
Pinko Commie Thieves on the City Council. That way you paint them into a corner on
issues involving your tower lease.

I'm guessing Crafton doesn't even know there is a ground system.

Not sure of the applicable law regarding the property, but my suspicion is that after the rent has gone unpaid for
a certain period of time, it essentially turns into a sheriff's sale and Crafton can do with the scrap whatever they
wish.

Could the WZUM Assignment be Modified to Change COL to say Bridgeville, and Locate the xmiter at the WWCS 540 site. Diplexing off their Towers?

1. A city-of-license change would require a new FCC AM filing window.
2. From the 540 transmitter site 1590 would not cover Pittsburgh well.

In short - more trouble than it's worth.

Wrong on #1.

Probably right on #2.

Because WZUM is the only service licensed to Carnegie, it can't move, period - at least not unless someone else can be persuaded to change their city of license to Carnegie. So in practice, the only way 1590 gets on the air from somewhere else is to let the current WZUM license expire and be deleted. And at that point, you do indeed need a major-change/new station application window to get a new 1590 licensed.

So I say Clarke is right.

Scott got my gist.

And a new 1590 wouldn't be licensed by the FCC as a daytimer. Once the towers are down, this turns into a
mess all around. It's not that it couldn't be done -- it's the amount of time, expense, and trouble you'd have
to endure to get it done. Not worth it.

WZUM was once the home to the legendary late Frankie Crocker and his inflammatory comments during the 64 presidential campaign referring to one of the candidates and a gasoline truck. I couldn't believe he got away with it.

That was one of the primary flaws with the Fairness Doctrine, somebody had to be actually listening
in order to file a complaint.

At least he didn't make his newswoman cry...

This one is dead. I think its time for all of us to move on! :-\

Putting Crafton Town Council aside, what asinine reason did the present licensee of WZUM give for not cooperating with you? (If you don't mind me asking...)

maybe we can all show up at the next Crafton City Council meeting
and begin chanting "Heck, no, we won't go!"........

No problems with the owner, but couldn't move forward due to the Crafton decision!
It looks like Crafton Boro has a Problem with 1590, In the late 90's They Forclosed on the Original Bldg. and Transmitter site.[Something About Taxes] Mrs Hickling made some sort of Deal with them to keep the Building, But not the Property the Towers were on. Mike Horvath Bought the License and Equipment But had to get a new Tower site, He Went to Boro Meetings Tring to work with Crafton to keep the tower site. Even Offering to Broadcast them Live. They offered the Current site to him, On a lease Basis. Stating they were going to use the Old Tower site for a Park. Did they build a park?

Good question. And is the original building still there?

I also own one of these tower sites that is "controversial" with the municipality where it is located. Sour grapes over a subdivision developer not being able to purchase it. So I sympathize with WZUM to some degree.
