WZXQ

I believe this was a rock station that was the predecessor to WEQZ (EZ 101.7). How long were they around and how good or bad were they? Also, any recognizable jocks worked there?
______________

WZXQ Rock 102 started not long after ZZQ went country. The original call letters were WDGM (or was it WDGN) in Canton, Which was Easy listening days and classical at night. It was 3000 watts. The first DJ I remember on Rock 102 Scott Mateer. The station burned down shortly after it came on the air. Seems like Scott Mateer went to Q-99 for a while (which I think surprisingly had its Edwards transmitter also burn down.) and eventually ended up on TYX. Rock 102 came back on the air from Gluckstadt as WZXQ. I remember some of the old ZZQ jocks were on Rock 102. ZZQ's Perez was there and I think Keven Vandenbrook was too. David Adcock did his Tunes Till Noon show on Sundays and kept doing it on the station even after they had dropped the Rock and went to automated EZ music WEQZ. Originally the station sounded a lot like WZZQ but seems like it became a little more commercial sounding towards its end as a rock station. The signal from Rock 102 was so bad that I used to listen to the simulcast on WYAI 780. The fact that I remember this stuff really makes me sound like a geek doesn't it? Feel free to correct me if any of that was wrong. There was a lot of stuff about it in the newspaper back then

WZXQ (Rock 102) was on the air from 1983 until early 1986.
I was lucky enough to work weekends there from 1985 until the end while
in college.
Some of the notable DJS were Perez, Kevin Vandenborek, and Glen Rogers on a "full time" basis. Trooper and Phil Buchie(excuse the spelling) from old ZZQ days also worked some weekends as well. And of course the late David Adcock on Sunday mornings. Rock 102 played some great progressive rock as well as some deep classics during its day.

Were there any unexplained "fires" at TYX? Sounds like someone liked to burn things.

Ha, I've wondered that myself. It was a strange that both stations burned down after Scott arrived. I remember when he worked at JDX it started to sound really bad so I called the request line and he said the transmitter had blown a tube and they were using an old backup transmitter, not sure if he had anything to do with that one though.

Re: WZXQ -Rock 102

I remember Rock 102 , it was a welcomed addition after WZZQ went country (WMSI-MISS 103 ). But the signal was really bad ! Some days it barely got into Jackson. I remember losing it at times out near Metrocenter . Thanks to Pat2 for the memories of Rock 102 . How do you remember all this stuff ??

I have no idea why I remember this stuff. The sad part is, the only time I ever sat foot inside a radio station was when I won a 62JDX booty bracer (a cheep stadium cushion with JDX on one side and Miss 103 on the other) and I won $194 from TYX when they called and asked me what my favorite station was (I didn't tell them that I rarely listened) I found this website while googling a radio station and found some of the conversation interesting. If I could have only used my memory for something that would have amounted to squat, like passing a science or algebra test which I usually flunked in high school. I once had a classmate that was afflicted with the same disease as I was, he said his folks called him a "walking radio", which tickled the crap out of me because my mom said the same thing about me. It got so bad when I was in Jr. High my parents thought I was nuts. Trust me, it never did much to get me laid. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Today I've learned to keep my mouth shut and keep it to myself.

I think 106 went top 40 around the same time or shortly after the demise of Rock 102. WKYV (KY-107) was in Vicksburg and was country but had a lousy signal in Jackson. In the eighties they moved to Jackson and I believe the studio was on highway 18. They eventually moved the studios into the AM 1590 building on forest Ave. and changed to Z 106, which was more pop back then. They changed AM 1590 to album rock WZRX and later metal (Z Rock) for while before moving the rock format to 106.7 and simulcasting. A few of the AM jocks moved to FM,(Darden Wade? and "Flying" Guy Austin) the AM station was actually closer to WZZQ and played better music when it was album rock in my opinion. Z 106 was a little more more hair bands and cookie cutter.

I agree... WZRX came closer to the ZZQ-102 sound than anything else. And... they did it in AM stereo. Sounded pretty good on my Sparkomatic AM Stereo receiver.

They sure did. I also had one of the sparkomatic AM stereos. They were still in stereo up untill just a few years ago. I still see a few "Stereo Gospel" bumper stickers around town. Is it still in stereo? my AM stereo radio is broken.

Nah - the AM stereo went away a couple of years ago. When Clear Channel got it back from Carl Haynes they installed a new transmitter a few months ago, so I don't think they even have stereo capability anymore. The only station I know of that was running AM stereo recently was WIIN.

AM Stereo was great. BTW, wasn't 620 in AM Stereo too?

Yea, we gave out AM Stereo radios to clients to proclaim the new technology. Didn't quite shift the paradigm, did it?
______________

Lemme see... back in the day it was WJDX, WKKE(WJNT) and WZRX running AM stereo. WJDX always sounded the best to me - the engineering staff was very careful about maintaining everything on Beasley Rd.

You Know, this blows me staying under the radar but when you , in writing, suggest that I am an arsonist, I felt I would let you know a couple of facts. The Q99 fire happened due to the owners not buying adequate wiring for the transmitter. There are several local engineers who can educate you on that. As far as the Rock 102 fire, I darn near got killed that morning. I arrived at 5:30 and when I put my hand on the door knob to the trailer it was hot, and if I had opened the door...well you wouldn't have me to kick around. By the way, They had me meet the State arson investigator at the trailer the next morning, and it happened to be Lee Adam's ( name from radio some of you know) father. He and I walked through the building with a device that "sniffed out" any kind of substance that would mean
arson. The investigation start to finish was about 4 minutes when he found that the small
"college dorm" sized refrigerator had not been closed all the way from the night before, and the motor on the back of it ran until it caught fire and you could see the v shaped beginnings of the fire and it was ruled accidental. So that plus the fact that I had just gotten married and you think I am stupid enough to burn myself out of a job ? All of this
verbiage leads to this. If you make anymore libelous statements, I am already suing a trucking firm that had a truck hit me from behind in Cullman Alabama doing 80 and left the scene, I'd be glad to drop one (Lawsuit) on you as well. I gave over 25 years of my life to this towns broadcast community. I along with some other very talented people spent years raising money for the needy, making owners rich and now I have my own business and I log on here and still see all of the same old names of people who are stuck in the glamorus and high paying world of Mississippi Broadcasting. To those of you who I mentioned as talented coworkers none of this is directed at you. So I'll sink back into my mole hole, and wait to see what else we can sue you for.

I just consider the source and the proffession

The thing about you burning down the radio stations was intended as a good natured joke, no on would seriouslly think you would do it on purpose. My apologies if it sounded like I was calling you an arsonist, I was just picking. By the way, I used to listen to you all the way back to your WJDX days, your show was great. I also vaguely remember you from ZZQ a loooong time ago. Why not come back and get on the radio? Some of the stuff these days just is't that good.

speaking of rock 102..didnt adcock do tunes till 2 even after the flip to elevator music? i seem to remember in a drunker stuper in the summer of 86 being amased that wlin was playing george thorogood on a sunday morning..on a ride to oxford with the band i was working for.?? and on q99..what was the whistle in their sound back in the summer of 85? it was really anoying.
