WZYP Hometown Countdown

Recently CHR 104.3 WZYP Huntsville, AL began their own weekly countdown show called the hometown countdown. You can listen to it online or on the radio Saturday mornings from 10am to 12 pm. It is also rerun Sunday at the same time.

It is hosted by morning show dj Mojo. It is interesting that they started their own weekly countdown show since that does not seem to be the norm on many top 40 stations. The only ones I can think of that do a local weekly countdown show are Kiss 108 Boston and KRBE Houston.

What I especially like about it is for one thing, they have actual clips of celebrity interviews (don't know where they got it from). Even more so is at the end of the first hour of the countdown, Mojo will spin a song from a local artist (even if it doesn't fit the top 40 format). This past weekend Mojo spun a hit from a Christian rapper living in Fayetteville, TN and last week spun a country hit by Heartland.

Since WZYP has an extensive list of 80s and 90s hits, at the end of the 2nd hour, Mojo will spin a song that was #1 some years ago. This weekend he spun Every Step You Take by PDiddy and Faith Evans that was #1 at this time in 1997 (Mojo said the song also reminded him of a local police officer friend that got murdered on duty several years ago). A couple of weeks ago they played Kris Kross that was #1 Memorial Day 1992.

Overall I give it an A-. Yes the chart is a bit Hot AC leaning (for instance there is no Lil Wayne Lollypop). Also, Mojo doesn't mention whether a song had more or less requests on WZYP this week compared to last week. It's also a chance to showcase local businesses (Sometimes Mojo did the countdown live on location from a grand opening, or would play a pre-recorded clip of him talking to the mobile home dealer that sponsors the countdown).

It is a nice alternative to AT 40 with Ryan Seacrest.

Im not sure if they still do it, but WNOU Radio Now 100.9 Indianapolis used to air the Indy top 30 countdown, which was local,,, I did like it alot better than Seacrest.... I have no idea if they still do it local or not, I'll have to check on that,,, Big Ups to the stations that go to the Extra effort to produce a locl weekly countdown,,, Its alot of extra work that they dont have to do, but it keeps it local, which I prefer.

I agree that these weekly local countdowns truly shows what is most popular in that area compared to the U.S. For example, the #1 song on the WZYP hometown countdown was Feels Like Tonight by Daughtry. That song is just about to fall off the top 40 chart as a recurrent, but apparently that is the song that people in the valley like the most. Don't worry, Bleeding Love ran a close second at #2 (which makes my ears bleed every time I hear it).

You can get TRL Weekend countdown un-hosted with the work parts which includes scripts, songs and clips. I'm not sure if ZYP is using this but I think Kiss in Charlotte does.

By the way, ZYP is my FAVORITE radio station

K~
