Heard them last night playing oldies. They're off right now though. I didn't hear any IDs or anything, just music. This is the former WKLD Oneonta.

After almost one year, maybe the wheels at 97.7 FM are starting to turn. Yeeeeeehaaaaaaw! ;D ;D ;D ;D As one can tell I'm very pleased. I guess I'll have to drive home tomorrow night via Hwy 231 to see if I can hear them. The transmitter site being only about 1/2 mile from 231, If they can be heard it will be there for sure, and that will also rule out hearing Gold 97.7 in Winfield or 97.7 The Peach.

ALRocker said he could hear it plain as day in downtown Dullman. I'd like to be able to pick up say....nashville's Lightning 100 in downtown Cullman. That'd be swet. :) (i'm not a country guy like ya'll is) ;)

I believe I found their tower. I was traveling up US 231 to Huntsville yesterday and noticed a new red/white tower to the east at approx MM295. I haven't noticed it before, but if one is traveling that way, it will be behind a mini stoarge place called "Robina's".

According to the FCC database, the new xmtr location for WZZN is just east of hwy 231 (north of Midway Road and just west of Allens Cross Rd). I know this area very well, as my grandmother used to lived off of hwy 231, in the Oleander community near the intersection of those two roads. She did have a Union Grove mailing address. That new xmtr is literally down the road from where she used to live, probably less than a mile.

Here's the link to the info on recnet:

I've just heard them that one time. Maybe they cranked it up once to keep their license, who knows.

Just heard them, ID and everything. "97.7 WZZN - Union Grove. On the air for equipment testing purposes." Just heard Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff." Hope they keep the music going! :D

anyone wanna guess where the studio is?

I called Great South Wireless back in February asking about employment and where the studio would be located at. I personally thought Arab, due to the close proximity. According to GSW, it will be in Huntsville.

I turned off my FM Transmitter so I can hear them without driving 1/4 mile from my tower site. I was hoping their signal would be better then it was with WKLD, but it is about the same.

i did some googling (it's nice to be a techy guy) ; it appears great south wireless has approximately "two" employees (who knows how accurate that report is) - and it appears they have used a consulting / implementation firm called Reynolds Technical Services out of Birmingham to build out the site.

I'd love to have some radio experience again - - give me a few years...I'll talk to both of you young whipper snappers. LOL.

I'm thankful they aren't country - i've had enough country to last me a life time.

Any ideas how this will play out with Arab's Fun 92.7? Seems like they'd be direct competition...

Back in the past, a station that is testing with a certain type music, that music will not be the format. They keep the real thing a secret so it will be a big surprise.

Anyone know what WHPH tested with before Oldies as 97.7 The Peach? If I recall there was a three month period between the transition from Z97 WEZZ to the Peach. Speaking of WEZZ, The individual reading WZZN's ID yesterday sounded much like one of the voices from WEZZ.

I know this is irrevelant to WZZN, but I thought they may have been going to implement a format on WZZN similar to that on WHPH.

When the news of the pending format change was announced by WEZZ, many months went by with the classic country format still in place, and then the station went through this sort of schizophrenic identity. Sometimes you'd tune the station in and it would be airing oldies and be identifying itself as "The Peach" and then you would back a few hours later, and WEZZ would be back with the classic country format. This went on for several weeks before the oldies format was permanently set in place. It sounds crazy to me to promote an upcoming format change, then wait months and do nothing about it, and then alternate back and forth for several weeks between two station identities. I do understand "stunting" with different types of music and all, but what on earth were they thinking going back and forth as both WEZZ and "The Peach", and for that length of time? It'll be interesting to see what WZZN will do between now and when it "officially" comes on the air.

found 95.3 translator this morning - it's basically the same as what WKLD was, is it not? (at least when it comes to timeless holiday favorites). I've got a nice antenna and i'm on the south end of Cullman but I was impressed when it was coming in no static or anything. Best I can tell this translator is coming off the old WKLD tower near Oneonta.

I prefer oldies over country anyway. :)

I had no idea Blount Broadcasting was still at it....but it looks to me like they found a way to keep an FM signal anyway after the same of WKLD...

95.3 has been on air since March or April. At first, their signal was terrible, but now it is doing very well. I can usually hear it as far west as West Point (Alabama:) without a problem. In February though they will have to drop Timeless Favorites since Citadel is going bankrupt and they are pulling the plug on T/F. They also have a new website, www.wcrl1570.com.
Anyone think WZZN will sign on Christmas day? I believe some stations have done that before, including WZRR 99.5.

Merry Christmas,
-Travis

I noticed an unknown station on 97.7 playing oldies with no IDs in Ardmore today, i was wondering where it was coming from, guess i found it. Loud and clear here in Toney with my DX rig.

EDIT: no wait, nevermind, i'm hearing Gold 97.7, as soon as i turned the antenna to point to Union Grove I completely lost it.

yeah, WKXM does surprisingly well to only be broadcasting at 3900 watts, and with an average antenna setup. There are many nights I can hear them out in the Kroger parking lot behind Lite 96.9. In fact, Gold 97.7 has a very listenable signal here about 50 miles away in NW Cull. Co.

well - did they finish the tower long before they built some studios? it's been going on what - two months - since we heard them testing? I remember when we moved to our first FM back in 96 the testing on the tower was like two weeks before the studio was ready....

anyone heard anything? pun intended.. ? :)
