WZZN GOES OLDIES

I have a friend who was listening to the Zone @ noon and frantically text messaged me with the news. I am out of the area so I cannot confirm.

So now we have no true rock station again... Man this is starting to remind me of November of '98. I wish the old CRC forum was still around sometimes, since I'd love to see the reaction to this from them!

It's true. Their final song as a rock station at 11:55 AM was the apropos "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica.

At 12:01 PM, the new format kicked off with The Beatles' "Rock & Roll Music", followed by "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen.

This all according to Yes.com.<P ID="signature">______________

Should WKQX move back towards a rock sound? With the Zone out of the way it should work out for them.

As for another staton in Chicago going active rock, it may never happen again considering how poorly WZZN did with the format.

"The True Oldies Channel" is the name.

Rick Nelson - Travelin Man is on now.

I believe ABC has a satellite service of the same name.

I can see that rock fans will be pissed, however this change was a no brainer. The Zone's ratings were awful and a 3 share format was just sitting there ripe for the picking.

94.7FM The True Oldies Channel...

This is the smartest move that ABC Radio has made in a LONG time.
WJMK left a huge format hole and lucrative billing.
Congratulations to Emmis, who benefits greatly from this format flip.
My sympathies for all the active rockers.

According to FMQB:

http://fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=121177

The new WZZN will have local programming during morning and afternoon drive, with a local Saturday night "Oldies party show." The rest of the station's programming will be filled out by Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel. The station launches with Shannon's programming to start, with the morning and afternoon shows to debut by the end of the year.

So they're actually using the satellite service right now. Interesting.

I can't think of any other big market music stations that rely so heavily on satellite programming. Will the lack of local personality in the midday and at night hurt them or is it the music that matters?

Oddly enough, as of 1:05 Central time the website at 947thezone.com is still fully intact with no mention of the change.

I've actually lived out of the market for most of their run, but it seems like the lack of a strong morning show never allowed WZZN to galvanize the young male audience the way WRCX did back in the day. I doubt it'll be as missed as Rock 103.5 was.

I agree JD. After all the tweaks it wound up a well executed format but not enough takers.

Nah, with THE LOOP and Q101 they have the active AND modern rock market cornered. All the bands on THE ZONE will be found on one or the other. Look for THE LOOP to get a little harder.

Will Satellite Automation Hurt Them?

Well... it'll hurt them... but I think they're planning for the future. Infinity found that no matter how great their oldies ratings were, that their revenue was going to continue to slip until the entire audience is dead. The teach you in marketing classes that it isn't effective to advertise to people over the age of 54. For the most part, their buying habits will never change, and the ads are useless. I think ABC is just learning that lesson. There will be a place for oldies radio for the next 40 years, but it won't be as lucrative as it has been in the past, so it needs to be run as cheaply as possible to maximize revenue.

The days of great oldies stations are coming to an end... outside of really old markets like Las Vegas and Phoenix... I'm guessing Florida has some pretty kick-ass oldies stations, too!

Holy crap! I wasn't reading the boards at all today. THAT SUCKS! I listened to the Zone way more then Q101!! OH MAN! I know the ratings weren't that great, but I enjoyed it. I would never get XM, as cool as it sounds, I just feel wierd about paying for radio. Well, back to my Ipod I go!

I thought the same thing. It was on sale for $19.99 with no shipping charges. Found a free promo code for 3 free months. The way i look at it, im paying (well, eventually) to get Energy back. Bpm 81 is sweet. Well worth it.

Well, strong morning show or not, I just don't think the audience was there for this type of format. Management gave the station plenty of time despite a lot of tweaking early on. I'd think there is a better chance of a full signal dance station signing on before another harder edge active rock station comes back!

Re: Will Satellite Automation Hurt Them?

I wouldn't be surprised if WZZN-94.7 ends up having local personalities at least 19 hours a day by January, if not 24.

They may use the playlist of the "True Oldies Channel" satellite format, but with local personalities.

And with 94.7 sure to knock WRLL out of the format, there will be a number of personalities now working there----and maybe some former WJMK-104.3 jocks----who might be available for 94.7.

Although officially, the station has said they would only be live and local in drive times, I think in the end, the station could have live and local personalities for most if not all of the 24-hour day.

After all, this isn't Clear Channel.
