WZZQ in Gaffney Flips

People in Cherokee County SC have a new choice on the dial for classic top 40 hits...70s to now on 104.3 FM. They play 70s disco, 80s New Wave, some R&B and rock from the 90s...Great Variety. A great alternative to 102.9 the Lake or Earth FM

This appears to be a low power translator station originally designed to improve the AM-1500 signal from Gaffney. However, it now may be operated as a separate station out of Greenville.

This is the remnant of the old 105.3 WAGI. When that station went to Charlotte, Gaffney's 1500 AM became the primary station for the community. The 104.3 translator in Gaffney really helps, but even some parts of Gaffney the signal doesn't do so well, especially when you get a few miles outta town. Cowpens is the farthest west this station can be heard reliably, but some days it doesnt do so well even there. More than half of Cherokee County is outside the 60dbu contour, and it gets alot of interference at times from WHRZ-LP Spartanburg and WBBQ in Augusta GA, even in parts of the city itself and going west.

Nonetheless, this is an awesome station, they just keep playing lots of a variety of music, similar to Abigail Radio in Greenville, commercials are few and far between. I know that most of the people here in my town have never heard this kind of music before, most of them are into Country music, which was the old format for 105.3 WAGI and 1500 AM.

I wonder how the local population would take to the disco music and other unfamiliar music on this station. Even though some of it is over 40 years old (and I've even heard some 1960's songs) alot of it is brand new to some, who have mostly only heard country music their whole lives. I know because I live in this town. This is Gaffney's own radio station, and for many years people have and will continue to stand by it because of it's history here in Gaffney. The owner, Dennis Fowler, is well known in Gaffney and is also the Coroner for Cherokee County. I'm surprised his company that own's WZZQ, Fowler Communications, formerly Gaffney Broadcasting, can pull off something like this, even over the more well known format thats been on for many years going way back to the old WAGI.

By the way I should point out that 104.3 FM does still simulcast 1500 AM. 1500 is a daytime only station, but the FM signal stays on 24/7, and gets out a few more miles than the AM station.

Earlier tonight there was strong tropo interference from WBBQ only 2 miles away from the broadcast site on Providence Road in Gaffney, strong enough to show WBBQ on my car's RDS display. Driving away from town the signal was almost completely taken over by WBBQ only 6 miles away near Thicketty/Love Springs.
