X @ 100.5 going bye bye?

I'm hearing something about WRAX going bye bye, VERY soon. anyone else hear anything on this?

I heard on NBC13's 10 PM newscast that the programming from WJOX moves to 100.5 Wednesday at 5:00 PM.

Will someone be able to tape the changeover.

Radio and Records reports on-line that the rumored format is sports. Yes, Birmingham needs another sports station, but how can they differ 100.5 from 690?

What happens to 690 once the sports programming moves to 100.5? Will 690 and 100.5 wind up simulcasting, or will Citadel try something else on 690?

Yeesech! :-[ That's the last thing B-Ham needs. Too much talk already.

That's my two cents.

R.D.P. <><

P.S. Makes me wonder, who'll take up the Alternative format, once 100.5 does drop it?

WRAX is running jockless right now. I've heard one stopset in the past 45 minutes; the word in the trades is that WRAX is flipping tomorrow at 5 PM to sports. Possibly at a WJOX simulcast, more like probably based on what I've heard.

I'm going to hopefully be home tomorrow night in time to roll an aircheck on the flip.

All I can say is: thank goodness for Sirius.

Yes it is happening. We were all informed in a meeting at 3pm today that the station was going to flip formats tomorrow on 5pm. It was a great ride for nearly 10 years and nearly 4 1/2 years for me. Hopefully someone in this town will put on a current based rock or alternative station. I can't think of a Top 75 market that doesn't have at least an Active Rock or Alternative station in it.

Finebaum?

Does this mean that Citadel has signed Paul Finebaum? I suspect they'll need a big dog to make this really work and he's the only really big dog in Birmingham sports talk.

I'd assume this would allow WZRR to become a full active rock station, since they have been heading that way for a while anyway.

There's a tear in Vulcan's eye this morning.

To Geno and the rest of the X: thank you for the great radio and the hard work that the staff so obviously put into it. Any chance that you might continue the Vintage Vault online, perhaps using Reg's http://www.regscoffeehouse.com/ page or infrastructure? I'm emailing Reg; tell him to check his email more than once a week (hah!).

Trips to Birmingham -- even if just to listen to the processing -- will now be much less fun. If it is any consolation, you would have never been able to overcome the signal problems, especially with your target audience continuing to move even further away from the already-distant tower.

The X had several upcoming music shows, what will happen to those events? If any of you readers are in Birmingham today (Wesnesday), what is the X doing inside the spot-sets today? Are they acknowledging the format shift or are the promos running as-normal? I listen to the stream down here in Baton Rouge, and the spot-sets are covered.

Anyway, thanks for all the fish, and I hope to hear the staff and that great music back on the air somewhere.

Wow Citadel managed to kill two good alternative stations in a short time. 100.5 and 107.7. Something kinda strange...on WRAX's website, the slogan changed. Yesterday it said "The new sound of alternative" and today it's "Birmingham's Only Alternative." Is it becoming an internet only station?

I'll always remember 107.7 the X, with it's awful dicked sound, not 100.5. Always blasted in like a local up here at the TN line (and still listenable beyond that, until Nashville's 107.5 blocked it out). I believe I remember reading somewhere that the X was at one point one of the top 5 Alternative stations in the nation.

Philadelphia. We HAD Y100 and 94.1 WYSP rocking out, until Y100 flipped to Rap (100.3 The Beat) and WYSP got screwed in the post-Howard era and is now 94.1 Free FM... mostly Hot Talk.

Philly DOES have 93.3 WMMR, but it's a more heritage rocker, and doesn't always fill the needs of the Alternative listener.

I wonder if COX would flip 97.3 to alternative or active rock? The did it to fill the void in Miami a couple of years ago. COX has good alternative stations in Tampa and Richmond, and good hard rock stations in San Antonio and Miami.

From all the stations that might switch, for 97.3 to change to alternative would seem to make the most sense. 101.1 isn't doing too well, either, but I suspect that Crawford Broadcasting wouldn't look too kindly to dropping talk for alternative. Then again, Crawford has dabbled in secular formats before; they're not a true Christian broadcaster IMO, more like "quasi-Christian" broadcaster, if you will.

Anything would probably fare better, ratings-wise, on 97.3 than "New Country". That's been a lost cause for Cox from day one, unfortunately.

That's not a bad idea. As someone's noted before, New Country hasn't made a splash, and now WZZK doesn't really need it. 97.3 may have a better shot as a rocker the second time around with it's bigger signal and one less competitor.

97.3 would be the most logical choice for a new alternative or active rock station. I agree with passtheword about new country being a lost cause from day one.

I heard the new sports format on at 4:30 PM; so much for recording the flip...
