X 103.9 Santa Cruz ... Now K-Bach?

So 103.9 is now Simulcasting K-Bach 95.5 in Santa Cruz / Monterey...

obviously X-103.9 is gone... (took em long enough)

they're probably moving K-Bach to 95.5...

but what's going on 95.5 ????

Any thoughts?

Really, once they flipped to the "hybrid" format, ratings took a sharp drop to about half of what they were when it was all rock.

What Time Did The Change occur? What was the last song before the switch to Classical?

crazy! I guess the experiment didn't pay off.. the question is now though, Who will pick up the "New Rock" slack in the Monterey/Salinas market? Or, will anyone? Maybe it'll be like the Modesto market and NOT have a true rock station for over 2 years.. LOL!

According to K-BACH's website, KBACH is moving to 103.9 and a new format is set to debut on 95.5. HA HA! It would be funny if a snooty old lady from Carmel turned on the radio to hear some classical music and suddenly she heard Jay Z Singing "99 problems but a b**ch ain't one". Where will the format wheel land?

In no way official, but YES.com has KMBY's last hour of playing the hybrid format as the 8 am hour on 2/7/08 with Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice", Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer", and Gorillaz "Dare" as the last songs played..

Sucks! X103.9 was the only station in the nation that was doing anything different and refreshing?? Then the rocket-scientists at Mapleton take a perfectly good signal at 95.5 and take it Country? Just what this market needed....2 Country stations....not to mention KPIG.

Guaranteed, HANK will be short-lived. Hey Mapleton, if you're reading this.....Smooth Jazz, Active Rock...wake up!!

And what did different and refreshing get them? Like I said above, ratings went from around a 3 all rock, to about 1.5 hybrid.

than go back to alternative, its better than another dumb country station

Mapleton seems to have no idea what it's doing???

There simply aren't enough people in this listening area to support KTOM, KPIG and now HANK???

I'm sure they're thinking, we took the chance with X1039 and got burned....so now we need to play it safe.

But how about taking a look at your market Mapleton people?

-Smooth Jazz is not represented here?
-Alternative is not represented here?
-KWAV pulls great numbers as the only A/C in town...why not try chip away at them?
-KTOM does alright here, but not enough for 2 stations to share? How can they not see that?

So frustrated with radio these days.....I hope Sirius really takes off, because it is great!

I say bring back the old KLRS (Colors) which used to be at 99.1 FM from 1987-1990. I worked there in 1988 and it was a breakthrough format for its time

What was KLRS then?

The calls use to be in Chico as a Top 40 Mainstream before Results flipped it to BOB-FM and changed the calls to KBQB.

Yes before KLRS was used in Chico, the original KLRS was in Santa Cruz, back in March of 1987, in the same building as KSCO. KLRS was in the basement (bomb shelter) and KSCO was upstairs where it still is today. KLRS had a NAC format but played a true New Age format with electronic music mixed. We were #1 among women in Santa Cruz/Monterey Counties back then. It could work again today if brought back and me as PD!

I have to agree that the hybrid format the X1039 used was unorthodox. If they were trying to cater to both Rap and Rock listeners, they should have done it in blocked hours. Not switching back and forth between genres every song. Then they took it to the point where they were mixing both songs together (skratch n sniff?lol). That was horrible. I am surprised, just like others posted, that it lasted as long as it did. However, what did they leave us with? Country and Classical. WTF? Time to look into Sirus.

I do miss listening to Loveline on my way to work. That was the main reason I listened to the X. I will be the first to say that I am glad I no longer hear that annoying, superficial, airheaded, untalented, Crissy anymore. Who put her on the air? She killed it.

I liked X1039's format. Thought it was fun, very different and yes, unorthodox....but that was the whole point! It beat the same tired, old radio that's on the dial now.

But Mapleton missed a bet taking 95.5 Country. 2 Countries in a market this size just doesn't seem to make sense?

KWAV pulls very good numbers here and a good A/C competitor would probably do very well. Even if they took half of KWAV's listeners, that would still give close to a 3 share or more!

just to clear some facts up...

if you look up the actual ratings on X1039 before and after the format flip you will see that before the flip the station was booking a 1.3 as active rock and as the hybrid format it hit the last 3 books above a 2.0... the format also targeted the male 18-34 demo and it was number one in the market in that demo.

as for the person annoyed by byron and crissy they are now on the beach in drive... and their show was number one in that day part. they are now also being syndicated to the merced market on KBRE (active rock) and the point in chico....

Also the reason the station was flipped had some to do with an aging sales staff over there who didn't get the format let alone understand how to position it to clients. It was an issue with them before the flip to the revolution format. Sales people were expected to sell to KPIG, Kbach, The Beach (hot ac), and the hippo as well as the X.

my props to byron who was the pd on the X... he did something original and had a ratings improvement with no budget and a rookie airstaff...

Right on guerillaboy-

They were indeed improving in the ratings and were in the sweet spot demo wise.

And you're right. I own a business and remember one of the staffers trying to sell me on all the stations, which seemed weird because they didn't seem to really know the X and how to sell it?

It really is a shame, because Byron did have a great sounding, fun and very unique station that given a little more time and money, could have done very well. I told lots of people from out of town to stream it and they all loved it...and kind of jealous that we had a station like this! Mapleton blew it...Bet HANK either goes away or KTOM, then what?

Someone mentioned KSCO a few posts back. Whatever happened to them. I have a photo taken in the studio about the time the station signed on. Looks like it was a promo shot for RCA equipment. Who owns 'em now and what are they programming?
