X 103.9 Santa Cruz ... Now K-Bach?

Re: KSCO Santa Cruz (Was: X 103.9 Santa Cruz)

Someone mentioned KSCO a few posts back. Whatever happened to them. I have a photo taken in the studio about the time the station signed on. Looks like it was a promo shot for RCA equipment. Who owns 'em now and what are they programming?

My great friend Michael Zwerling owns KSCO/1080 and KOMY/1340, which are still in that same original building on Portola Drive, along the banks of the beautiful Corcoran Lagoon.

MZ mentioned to me that, although he hasn't received an offer worth jumping on yet, the stations are still for sale. One upshot, though, is that their sales have been up since he made the announcement.

Billy Graff (a/k/a Billy Big Voice), the stations' legendary production director, mentioned to me today that KOMY's long-postponed tower and transmitter fix is nearly complete, and should improve coverage significantly.

KOMY is celebrating its first anniversary with the "The Oldies Station" format from Jones Radio, which was previously syndicated by Drake-Chenault. Listen online at http://www.KomyRadio.com

A gallery of KSCO building photos is on the station's website at http://www.ksco.com/gallery.cfm

I was interrupted mid-reply and neglected to mention that KSCO/1080 is currently "Talk Back Radio," with live, local programming during the drives, and mostly syndicated conservative talk (Rush, O'Reilly) and goat glands during other time slots.

The promo photo that Moose mentions is apparently in broad circulation. It seems that any time the subject of KSCO comes up, the next line spoken is "I've got this old promotional photo of their studio..."

Why, there's even one hanging up in the back room at KSCO!

LOL...Rush and O'Reilly on the air in Santa Cruz, CA. I guess it's a way for the liberal left to keep tabs on what the far right fringe is thinking.

The pix in the KSCO gallery section of their site are wonderful.

Wow Rush and O'Reilly in Santa Cruz??? Being moderate is too far right for 90% of Santa Cruz how on earth do they think this will work?

radioID does bring up a good point. We have seen station after station go after heritage powerhouse KDON in the market (and so far fail) Ygmaet no one has really gone after the other powerhouse in the market being KWAV. Any particular reason for this? I know they get indirect competition from KCDU and in a lesser sense KOCN.

Will Santa Cruz ever get a good modern/alt rock station? KMBY did well back in the day, from what I'm told, but have the demographics shifted to where true alternative rock is no longer a viable format? X was more active and played hiphop, and still didn't survive so I wonder if there's any hope for say a Live 105 style modern mix.

Michael Zwerling own KSCO and has since 1991. Fuller-Jeffrey owned them before that in which I worked there

What about BOB 95.5? Since their playlist is mostly alternative music and not adult hits.

In ancient times, way, way back in the day KMBY 1240, and KDON 1460 were the Top 40 stations, and KTOM 1380 was the Country station for the Monterey Bay area market. In fact KDON was easily heard here at night in So Cal. No longer today with changes that were made at KENO and KTYM going full time.

KSCO/KLRS will always be the ame. Santa Cruz radio died years ago

I say bring back the old KLRS (Colors) which used to be at 99.1 FM from 1987-1990. I worked there in 1988 and it was a breakthrough format for its time
KLRS was the station that a lot of radio people listened to when they wanted to leave work "at the office."
It was an oasis. Not to mention my old friend Scott McConnell did an excellent morning show. BTW, if you know where he is these days please let me know. Thanks...
