X(E)PRS has changed again (or is stunting)

You are seeing TV ads for XEPRS Oldies on KFMB Channel 8? Those I have got to see!

It sounds like Monte Maria programming is still there, as of 9:30am.

EDIT: BTW, the 1090 signal quality is very poor this morning. Must be running on reduced power.
Yup - must be sharing time with "El Chigon" and Wolfman Jack. Still, seeing an ad on KFMB-TV - and tuning in to 1090 could be confusing as to what's on when the spots run. I may just give 'em a call later and see what's up.

Slight issue here- a lot of the songs they're playing are stereo, but only one channel is feeding the transmitter. "Hitchin' A Ride" which played yesterday sounded really strange with much of the vocal obscured by the instruments.
That's called "fake stereo"/duophonic. When record companies (Columbia, Capitol, RCA and others) in the 1960's put out stereo albums that had previously been mixed in mono, they remixed them and they sound like crap. Those fake stereo/duophonic mixes then were put on to the CD releases of those same albums. There are some by the Beatles that really sound bad, you can't hear any of the vocals at all.

Not sure of the copyrights but the was a Chattanooga furniture store that had a "Wolfman" (just a guy with a bread) doing TV commercials. I don't know how many folks saw "American Graffiti", there might have been some confusion.

Given that XEPRS is entirely brokered programming, I am no longer surprised at anything that comes out of the 1090 transmitter in Baja.

Maybe Mr. "name that David won't say" has a financial backer we don't know about and is buying more airtime. That would be consistent with his recent announcement of more DJs being added.

And the issue with the Vanity Fare song could also be a error in how they are summing L+R, putting the vocals out of phase.

The only place I've heard of Duophonic being used is by the Beach Boys but Brian Wilson is deaf in one ear and everything was mixed to mono. My understanding was the different tracks were combined to create "duophonic" instead of actual stereo.

Yes but fake stereo (Duophonic is just the name Capitol used for it) wasn’t just for Capitol or The Beach Boys. Look at the back of this LP:
And the front of this one:

Capitol called it Duophonic just for marketing/their own purposes. What Columbia, RCA and others called it I don’t know, but they did it too and it was the same fake stereo effect.

Yes, there's some $$ behind this. I finally listened at a time when 1090 was playing oldies. Heard a quick jingle with singers singing "AM 1090." Maybe it's an ancient clip they bought the rights to, or maybe something produced quickly. The point is: for those five seconds they actually sounded like a real oldies station.

For a few years (ending around 2015, I think), San Diego had a self-described "moldy oldies" show for a couple hours on KCBQ 1170 at night (when the signal goes to drastically lower power). I remember the gravely-voiced deejay doing as much talking as music-playing. Could it be the same guy pushing the 1090 effort?

Signal has been strange. the other day I was listening indoors in Simi Valley and there was a lot of static then all of a sudden it cleared up and I could hear it pretty good. Also last Monday I heard El Chingon" say that three new Disc jockeys were coming soon . I also called the phone number last Friday and he answered the phone. I asked if they were going to add any 1950's songs. He said he would pass it on the the ones who are in charge of the station.

You're not the only one noticing strange things with the 1090 signal. Last Wednesday morning the signal was weak, but then back to tomorrow later in the afternoon. The same thing on Friday. Maybe, repairs are being done to the antenna system, like finally replacing the tower that went down.

The oldies "Mighty 1090" portion of the broadcast schedule appears to have now expanded to a Noon start time (had been a 3p start until last week). Appears the station is a passion project of a wealthy La Jolla resident who garnered a bit of local billboard legacy lore a decade ago; who earned his wealth in real estate and now partakes in various charitable activities countywide. Glad to see him building this project... for the rest of us to enjoy (and discuss).

Well, if he has enough money to be both a philanthropist and the backer of this vanity project, who are we to say he can't?

He could be the "Saul Levine" of San Diego!

Not quite, Michael.

The area codes for San Diego are (619), (760) and (858).

Generally now and has been for some 30 years , 619 is south of Interstate 8, 858 is north of Interstate 8, 760 is north of Highway 56.

I could have phrased that better. Most of the population in San Diego County has 619 area codes.

Five years ago, they were warning about running out of numbers (7.7 milllion possible combinations), and began an 858 overlay for new lines that would have normally been 619. The CPUC calls it a "boundary elimination overlay"---meaning that now, if you were in San Ysidro, they'd probably give you an 858 number.

The point being that this was a 619 area code that another poster mentioned and it's San Diego County.

619 is also the signature move of wrestler Rey Mysterio.

I'm a couple miles north of I-8 and it's still 619 here.

You left out that 760 has also had the 442 area code overlay since 2009.

And, as Mike said in a different choice of words, the geographic area for 619 and 858 was re-merged in 2018 with both area codes in service as overlays to each other.

Wikipedia has a list of all the California area codes with the history of the splits and overlays:

Of course, it should also be mentioned that with the overwhelming switch to wireless for personal use, and people keeping their cell number as they move around the country, that determining the geographic location for a number is now only reasonably accurate for businesses with landlines (and even that is not 100% ... for example, I have VoIP home phone service, with a second virtual number in area code 323 which I use for professional business; however, I live in 818 and both my main "line" and my cell phone have numbers in that area code).
