Well...I hated what happened with Planet Radio in Jax and where X101.5 has gone over the years. When I went to Tally, I brought the logo (yes, as crazy as it may be, the logo has basically survived since 1997 with the exception of the slogan) and tightened it up to be a hit based alternative station, with some 80s flashback type stuff. The first segue I heard in the market before I took it over was Korn into Jewel, while it was still 101.5 WXSR...ouch. I took a lot of edge off the music but added Keith Eubanks as the VO & tried to be more fun with the imaging. X101 was the first station to play Sister Hazel, Creed, and a lot of new artists...but it had balance for males and females, upper and lower demos, and new to old. As much as I love Active Rock music, esp. on a station like 98ROCK in Tampa, I absolutely think it's a mistake to be active rock in Tallahassee. If X were not loaded up with Premium Choice (love Klinger - hell, I hired him in Jax), L&T, Sixx Sense, it would be easier to be an alt...but the days of a locally programmed station like that in a smaller market probably is just not likely every again. The active rock programming isn't bad, it's just not what I would do if I had a stick in Tallahassee and wanted to make money. When I arrived, X was competing against Zrock and Gulf 104 - never could get past Gulf because of John Boy and Billy, but the station did well and wasn't entirely focused on dudes, which made it easier to sell. We were active (not active rock) in the market, did a LOT of promotions that generated a lot of talk, had cool swag- inflatables-vehicles (wonder what ever happened to my VW Thing & Bread Truck), . A lot of great memories...it was special. Now, I'm not sure it's any different than TK101.
