X1067 Goes Premium Choice

X1067 wants to go South

X106.7 will also be going "south".. [If the FCC approves this app request]

http://cdbs.recnet.net:8080/fmq.php?facid=&call=WCGX&ccode=1&latd=&lond=&city=&state=&country=US&zip=&party=&party_type=LICEN&fac_type=ALL

They have a App to move to the old Ch 6 tower on Dodridge (which I think was where the translator on 106.7 actually transmitted from before 106.7 signed on with its Westerville signal as a move in from 106.9)

Looking at coverage maps the new site would give them solid coverage over columbus metro.. which the current NE signal suffers from issues in parts of town.

That said, why did they have to apply for a downgrade to Class A order to move to the old Ch 6 tower on Dodridge?

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/translator/57042/fcc-report-420/#.T5LyAXLMj1U
Clear Channel Alternative “X106.7” WCGX Dublin/Columbus, OH has applied to downgrade from a Class B1 to A while moving its tower location into Columbus proper. It will downgrade from 7.3kW at 180m to 3kW at 144m but will improve its coverage in Columbus proper and its southern suburbs.

The coverage area is a little better than Recnet shows, if you go to the FCC Data base they revised the application a couple of days later with some corrections to avg height above sea level. it give a bigger coverage area. still class A downgrade so they can move south toward 106.5 in Chillicothe

Still not as good at The Brew or Jack FM. Not sure if this is the best move... but I guess it will improve campus and downtown coverage.

It actually is the "best move"

Brew, and Jack are both downtown, and this is certainly going to help with building penetration around campus, and downtown in general, so overall, it's a better and less expensive operation. Overall, it's not a bad move, and only God knows what CC may do in other markets, if they do anything at all. If you think back, 98.9 is also a downgrade, from its previous engineering.

It's not really dumb in CC's eyes.. Would you rather cover farm land north of Columbus or have a clearer signal in and near Ohio State and Short North, the areas that are more attracted to your "alternative" music format?

its almost the same .....

So when they get this move completed I wonder how bad they will hurt WWCD ratingwise? I remember that the reason WWCD leased the 102.5 frequency was to get better campus coverage.

It appears they want to move the tower to be much more competitive with WWCD.

Will there be any objections filed against this application? If so, it may be years before 106.7
moves to this new tower site. WWCD may be long gone by then. There has been some speculation
on this board that WWCD may lose its LMA for 102.5 in the foreseeable future anyway.

Actually that transmitter is a couple blocks from campus. So if there is no objections it will blast in the campus area. I do remember WSYX TV moved to land by Greenlawn Cemetery because they had issues with downtown buildings causing viewers south of town to have problems getting a clear picture.

doubt it, and seriously, they are applying for a downgrade, so in theory, nobody should be affected by anything they do. They also own everything that is even remotely close to 106.7, so short of upsetting the folks down in Dry Ridge, Ky, who's going to care?

The map I was seeing at the FCC site was barely covering 270. If the map above is accurate, I can understand what they are doing.

EDIT:
This was the map I was seeing. It seemed very anemic, but I guess that's not the most current one.

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://tr...req=106.7&contour=60&city=DUBLIN&state=OH.kml

"city grade"is about 17 miles versus "service grade", which is about 32, From West Jefferson, to Pataskala, and much more practical, so judge by at service grade, and of course, you can hear much further than that, without any interference. All CC did was center the signal on downtown, which is a good deal for them, and as such, I don't believe they will change anything else, as that could only degrade their own signals.

From an engineering standpoint, it's a great move...They could not do it, if they stayed at the same class/ height & power that they had. The have a much better signal over population (metro), then they had before, so pretty much more signal where it counts, which is what it's all about! Since there is nothing around them, and being FM, they will appear to go a lot further then you might expect.

Doesn't tOSU also own the tower on Dodridge? (the old ch 6 tower?) if so .. they won't really be changing much either since they currently lease space on ch34's tower in Westerville.. so it's same owner just different tower.

I think this is a big win win for 106.7... I am guessing NABCO really hopes now they can build out 103.9 (their app is still pending for the move to the west side)

If 106.7 stays alternative I could see this hurting CD101 even more so with the signal blasting right down Campus and the Short North (CD101's biggest target areas).

[Of course we all know that 102.5 is for sale and CD101 is on borrowed time unless they can some how buy it -- while yes they have a LMA -- LMA's are not always forever]

They lose a lot of overall coverage with that 3kw signal. Interesting that this popped up.

Does seem like a good move. Living outside the city itself, it would bother me expect for the fact 106.7 lost me for good when it tossed Gen X out the window.

I remember years ago that wwcd wanted to swap towers with wcbe but they declined. That would have helped them on campus. Now that they use 102.5 under a LMA when the original owner finds a buyer they might want to talk to wilkes about buying the 94.1 translator. City will get a signal but not much else. I think 106.7 made a downgrade with the move to campus probably has to due with WXMG 106.3 in London and WNKK 107.1 Circleville being close by.
