'Xena' Reboot With 'Lost' Writer in the Works at NBC

NBC is rebooting “Xena: Warrior Princess” and has hired “Lost” writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach to executive produce.

The series, which originally aired from 1995-2001, focused on the titular warrior princess (Lucy Lawless) seeking redemption for past atrocities by using her fighting skills to defend the weak and innocent. Lawless, however, has not been confirmed for the reboot.

Executive producers for the new series are also Rob Tapert (the original co-creator of “Xena”) and Sam Raimi for their company Ghost House Pictures in association with NBC International Television Studios.

Xena originally began as a character on “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” starring Kevin Sorbo. She was to be killed off after a few episodes, but she proved so popular with fans that she was spun off into her own show. The show proved incredibly popular, ranking among the top five syndicated cable shows during each of its seasons.

I think they should play with the concept a little and bring Lawless back as the older Xena. I saw her on a talk show recently. She still looks great.

She probably wouldn't want the job anyway...

Xena will be openly gay in 'Xena: Warrior Princess' reboot

Lucy Lawless' character of Xena in Xena: Warrior Princess will be openly gay in the upcoming reboot of the show, its new executive producer has confirmed.

Following suggestions over the extent of the relationship between Xena and comrade Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor), executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach has now confirmed via a Tumblr Q&A that the new series will "fully explore a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication".

In 2003, Lawless told Lesbian News that Xena was "definitely" gay: "There was always a ‘Well, she might be or she might not be’ but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very final scene, that cemented it for me."
