XL 950: Cubs Out, Reds In

Hi...
Just heard that XL950 will carry some Reds' games for the '09 season instead of the Cubs.

Why...?

How much would the Reds pay...and why would they? It's easier to listen to the Reds on WLW, especially at night.
What's in it for the Reds? Can't be money--what could 950 pay them?

I would assume that WNDE chose not to renew relations with the Reds, since I can't think of a reason the Reds would prefer WXLW to WNDE. WNDE must have figured out that the Reds are just as easy--if not easier--to hear on WLW.

It isn't clear to me whether the Cubs will stay on the FM (WFDM) or the Reds will move there as well.
I can get WGN on my SuperRadio or on my Hammarlunds, but not on a regular AM radio.
It made much more sense for XL950 to carry the Cubs, didn't it?

Perhaps someone can explain the dynamics of this relationship--where's the win-win? Who's paying whom what, and why?
Seeking enlightenment...
Snorlax.

Probably more games on wfdm, they run 12,336 Indian games on wxlw

Lets interupt our talk radio with more baseball..... another truly brilliant move ::)

I rememeber when WNDE has the Indy Indians and still had its deal with the reds, Reds games were few and far between on the big 1260, there most likely be a big reds Fans outcry that they wont be getting there games on a local station. like the past few years in LOuisville when Clear channel bounced the reds to a Suburban FM Station they owned in favor of the Minor League Bats. and the reds moved to another Station and pulled it from CC. i could see some out cry coming here where the reds might not last long if they dont get aired even if it is on 95.9

Mike...
In a move that is bound to shake the world of sports radio to its very foundation, the Indians and WXLW agreed to a two-year pact to keep the Indians on Indy's 117-watt nighttime blowtorch.

Ratings and signal are not the issue, don't overthink this. As with almost everything, just follow the money.

Ann,
That is one of my questions above...I'd like to know from someone in the business where the money is coming from/going to.

The Reds offered a better situation than the Cubs.
During the summer, power down doesn't happen till 930pm. Most games are almost over by then.

are the games on the fm or am ..and looking at the reds schedule...a ton of games start 7:10pm

full power until the eighth inning?

but how many reds games will even end up airing on XL 950 since they have 144 Indians games to air and at least 5 to 6 times a week those are nights games. and with a majority of the reds weekday games at 7:10pm. how many will actually get aired. not to many. would have been better to stay if i were the reds at 1260. the Cubs got bounced over to 95,9 when 950 got the Indians

The FM probably stands to bill more, in local sponsorship sales, airing more Cubs games. No clearance revenue from the Cubs, but you're bound to bill more charging your locals for 50 games versus 25 [or whatever increased schedule they'll clear on FM].
The Reds are probably nothing more than filler on nights the Indians aren't on. Reds wouldn't pay CC, or Raven for clearance. No money here. All barter.
The Indians are the money on the AM - paying for clearance.

...and 1260: Reds Out, CUBS IN!

Looks as if they will air 100+ games...and the station is AUDIBLE at night down here in Franklin!! And WGN is harder to receive here than WLW is. +1, WNDE!! ;D

But here's a ganeral question:
Why are the sports ststions so intent upon not disturbing the afternoon drive shows? Are they billing that much in afternoon drive? Would something like a Cub broadcast be a "biller-killer" during afternoon drive time??

Perhaps I am a minority, but I would rather listen to a Cub game than hear someone talk about Our Miss Brooks High School basketball, or even IU or Purdue basketball. Perhaps this is because I grew up in NY City and not here. In any case, I can't see that any of the three afternoon sports hosts are super talents and listener magnets...or are they?

BTW...I am learning a lot about the business by posting here, exactly as I had hoped. Thanx to all for your informative posts!!

It seems to me that in recent years, there have been less and less radio stations in Indiana on the Reds Network as compared with the 1960's & 1970's. I recall in the mid-1960's, for example, WTTV (now WTTS) at 92.3 on the FM band was on the Reds Network and provided a powerful signal across central Indiana and into Ohio. When I was in Brown County, Indiana a few years back, I searched the AM & FM dials, but the only place I could pick up the Reds was on WLW.

Snorlax,
WNDE-AM 1260 will probably have a bit more success packaging, and selling the Cubs as part of a broader sports play-by-play sponsorship opportunity [ie.. annuals built on sponsors airing in all play-by-play broadcasts on the station throughout the year]. However, even if they didn't sell $1 worth of play-by-play, they can still clear the midday spot inventory they've sold in the game if necessary. Jim Rome and anything else syndicated on the air there doesn't have any more local inventory than the play-by-play, so it's a wash at worst. Although personally, I'm very much over Jim Rome and would prefer the games anyway. ;)

The Reds did have a huge network in the 70s and it covered several states as far away as Tennesee and West Virginia. I think there was even a station in Illinois. Times have definately changed. Does Crawfordsville still carry the Reds?

Could the reason that baseball, in general, is hard to find on radio be that programs like Rush, Hannity, etc are somewhat dependent on "Live" shows. I know that Rush is rarely heard outside of the 12p-3p window (since Indiana went DST).

Therefore, the power stations are relunctant to pre-empt such top-billing programming for baseball.

I wonder how up-to-date that list of stations on the Reds Network is? In 1962, in terms of the number of radio stations, the Reds had the largest network in the National League. I believe the White Sox had the most, back then. Of course, with WLW as a flagship station, you don't need as many stations, particularly in towns and cities with-in 75 miles or so of Cincinnati. When the Reds had the large network, their flagship station was WKRC whose power was much less.

The list seems about right. I was a little surprised at the southwest Indiana and especially the Illinois affiliate; I thought that had all become Cardinals country. Still, in the Reds peak 70s years it seemed like you could tune up and down the AM and FM dials and hear the Reds everywhere. Even close in stations like WPTW-FM in Piqua and even WPFB in Middletwon.

well the List on the Red's website must be very current since it has WXLW/WFDM listed as Indianapolis/Franklin Affiliates and WQKC as the Louisville Affiliates when in past years the Reds affiliates in indy and louisville had been WNDE and WKRD-FM respectively
