XM 31 The Torch leaving and so am I

As of April 17 The Torch will be no more on XM. "Exclusively" on Direct TV bla bla bla. I sent in my complaint and received this canned response:

"Thank you for contacting XM Satellite Radio.

We appreciate all our subscribers comments and suggestions. We have
forwarded your suggestions and programming concerns to our Programming
Department for review and consideration. Please feel free to contact
Programming at [email protected] regarding the schedules and
programming on XM.

If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to send an
additional email or you may contact a Listener Care Representative directly at
1-800-XM RADIO (800-967-2346). For commercial accounts, please contact
1-888-689-2300 or view the Frequently Asked Questions at
commercial.xmradio.com."

Unless XM wants to pay for Direct TV for me...I'll be kicking them to the curb on April 17...and getting Sirius.

God forbid you hear something to open your mind

I guess the name narrowcast says it all.

Dear Narrow: there are plenty of KLIFE translators polluting the American FM airwaves. Enjoy their plentitude.

Buh bye.
Edited by zumahans1 on 04/06/06 02:41 AM.

You can still get it on XM Radio Online. Free to all subscribers. You can also listen to it free on AOL Radio. With or without an XM subscription.

I'm sad to see The Torch go. Seems like its going at the same time as WRGX Sturgeon Bay, WI which is changing (remaining online however) due to lack of funds.

In a nutshell, flooding the nation's airwave with lowpowered FM translators that step on existing stations and make the FM dial as crappy as AM.

Plus, their programming is AWFUL. If it's not send us your money, it's crappy light rock sung by alleged virgins and self-castrated preachers.

Hypocrites all.
Edited by zumahans1 on 04/08/06 05:53 AM.

Well, it's the FCC that allows for the LPFMs. K-Love (not K-Life as you previously mentioned) is merely one of hundreds of programmers of LPFMs around the country who are taking advantage of their existence. Is your beef really that it's Christian-based programming on many of these LPFMs and not so much the mere existence of LPFMs?

IMHO, these illegal pirate stations that program anarchistic and socialist programming that are the real "polluters" of the nation's airwaves. Not to mention that they literally put people's lives in danger. Case in point is the Florida pirate FM broadcaster recently reported in the Miami area interfering with that city's airport communications.

I meant K-LIFE, because that's what they are. Right to Life Tubthumpers.

You mean moneychangers in the temple...

We're talking about translators and we're talking about loopholes.

Just how many? Not thousands. Not even dozens.

An idiot who should be locked up.

It is wise to know of what one is speaking before doing so. You clearly lack wisdom in addition to lacking knowledge.

And none of this has to do with XM's "The Torch."

Oh, thank you, wise sage.

The fact is the K-CRAP signal is available on hamster-wheel-powered translators nationwide, making The Torch a waste of good bandwidth that could otherwise be utilized for an XM traffic channel for Davenport and the Gretaer Quad Cities.

Re: Static

It sounds like your bias towards Christianity is what is running your conversation. To say all Christians are hypocrites is just as ignorant and full of hate as it would be to say that all members of the Nation of Islam are "towelheads" or "terrorists". You didn't mention all the low-power Spanish speaking stations around the country... you focused on your bias.

Also, back to radio..... you must not know anything about Christian programming or respect the genre at all, because comparing music that is played on "The Torch" to KLOVE is like comparing Incubus to Yanni. Here in Seattle, one of the most liberal cities in the country, our locally programmed Christian music station was #3 in the money demo in the Feb. Christian programming is not a "waste of bandwidth"....clearly you haven't been watching as the format has been getting hotter and hotter.

That was a pirate rap station, not a christian. There's over a half dozen rap stations that I heard of that operate illegally. Foul Language every minute and signals that can travel in the S. Florida area about 20 miles.
Most of these stations are black or haitians that operate brasily. I've monitored them when I'm down there, and yes it's interesting....but you ask where are the feds, the legal stations they step on.
Florida has the strongest enforcement rules on pirate or illegal low power that raises a question to why these continue without any consequences.
But meanwhile a few years back, they threw the book at a white college student fining him $6,000 in Tampa for operating a pirate from inside his dormitory.
It does make you wonder.

Which is why it is getting dropped nationwide? Right.

And get off your persecution complex. That act is 2000 years old and full of lard.

I said christian broadcasters are hypocrites, which they are.

Thet are the 10-watt equivalent of the moneychangers in the temple.

And since you bring up the Spanish Christian broadcasting hypocrites, I amend my complaint to include them, and thank you very much for reminding me.

KLOVE and The Torch are exactly similar in many ways, not the least of which is that their proponents are turning coin by using popular forms of music to generate support for their cause - and turn a buck.

Ever drive by the TBN's palace? Remember PTL? How about the Vatican's opulence? All the same thing.

Re: Static

You're welcome, but I'm guessing you're not really much of a learner.

K-LOVE's parent, EMF, owns or operates stations in every class (yes, including C).

> ...making The Torch...

The formats of K-LOVE and The Torch are not at all similar and share only a handful of titles (maybe just a couple). Believing the two are equal shows absolute ignorance.

> ...a waste of good bandwidth that could otherwise be utilized
> for an XM traffic channel for Davenport and the Gretaer Quad Cities.

You just don't understand the satellite business model -- you're still thinking in terms of mass appeal (or, at least, you think you are). While the mainstream channels are surely well listened-to, it's the niche formats that are otherwise unavailable to most that can and do generate paying subscriptions. "The Torch" is one of those that can and has generated paying subscriptions, and that's what this business model is all about.

In reality, in terms of pure appeal, it's the dance channels that have the absolute lowest appeal and could/should have been lost.
