XM and KZLA

Starting a new thread, since the other XM/KZLA thread moved away from discussing radio.

Here's an interesting study:

Can XM Replace KZLA?

As XM Satellite radio attempts to attract disenfranchised Country music listeners in Los Angeles, Bridge Ratings conducted a quick study of 1000 former KZLA listeners this week to determine their interest in Satellite radio. Here are the results:

1) Will you subscribe to Satellite radio to replace the loss of KZLA?

Yes Definitely

2%

Somewhat Likely

2%

Not Likely

96%

2) If you are not likely to subscribe to Satellite radio to hear country music, which one of the following best describes your reason:

Cost/Don't See Value

47%

KZLA Was More than Just the Music - Can't be Replaced

30%

Prefer My Own CD's/MP3's

18%

Don't Know

5%

The study found that a significant portion of those who called KZLA their "Favorite, the one they listened to most" when it was Country, described the station as "irreplaceable" by virtue of its on-air talent and Southern California "sound."

Who paid for this survey?

Methodology?

Push polling?

I see the not-so-subtle hand of the NAB at work.

Ah ... if these folks only knew. I've only begun enjoying country music SINCE I started listening to XM. Smart of XM to take over the concert sponsorship -- that's one music (and customer) category they really can own. Also supports it's female (Oprah, Take Five) strategy.

XM and Sirius should take a lesson from the way cell phone companies market their product. Give them 30 days to try it out. If not satisfied bring/send the product back and just pay for the first month of service. Otherwise, we'll give you select products free with a one or two year subscription.

I got my XM satellite radio with a new car and was given a one year free subscription. I'm still enjoying that but I will pay up when I have to. I can't live without it now. As a news/talk junkie, I really love the audio side of the tv cable news channels. Of course, I love the variety of music channels, too. I would reprogram the music on many of them, though (especially 70's...too dull a playist).

People just need to be exposed to the product. I'm sure they will be at the concert.

As far as any study or opinion poll is concerned, we all know it can be skewed just by the way the questions were asked or even the inflections of the questioner. I take them all with a grain of salt.

1st NAB memo: Gee, we have a problem. Country music has just been abandoned by one of our corporate clients. All the newspapers and TV stations are saying that the only way LA residents can get country music on the radio is XM or Sirius. HD radio country music in LA and NY is available - well - only in our studios.

2d NAB memo: Let's hire some radio industry veterans, who get all their paychecks from radio companies, and have them do a push poll. Have them ask questions like: "You listened to KZLA at work, at home, and in the car. It would cost you $450 to buy all new radios, and then $36 a month. Is XM or Sirius worth that to you?"

3d NAB memo: "What are we waiting for?"

I think XM is smart to start sponsoring events, concerts and the like. It would certainly gain awarness from the general public if nothing else. There are still people who don't know what satellite radio is.
That being said, the average person doesn't need or want another bill to pay in this era of gadgets, cell phones, blackberrys, cable tv, etc.....
My opinion is that the programming, not to mention sound quality certainly does not merit over $12 per month for satellite radio.

Google is your friend ... there are deals to be had once your subscription runs out, don't pay retail.

I've got a 3 month free trial in my new car that's about to end, and I think I'l renew but with some misgivings. Check out the XM forum on this site, everyone is displeased with the signal quality of XM these days.
