XM and Sirius Music Changes Next Week

Shredder, playlists are being changed on both platforms... I know Sirius got some of the XM channels replacing their equivalents and us XMers got a lot of Sirius channels. Some folks on a certain other message board seem to think it's just "name changes" but I've heard significant changes to playlists on channels like XMU and Fred, now XM U and 1st Wave.

It seems like the XM-programmed channels haven't changed except to add constant promos and DJ interruptions, and the Sirius replacements brought all that PLUS their shallow playlists.

Oh and Cousin Brucie, Wolfman and Motormouth are still on the 60's. :)

My favorite channels were mostly the urban ones. Soul Street, The Rhyme and Suite 62 are now all gone, and I refuse to listen to their Sirius replacements. Before the stations themselves died, the personality was taken out of them.

Im with you. Suite 62 was the best presentation of an Urban AC format I have ever heard. Like I posted on another thread, Suite 62 invited you in to listen to the music. Heart & Soul may be the same musically, but the name change is so blasé.

At least The Groove came away unscathed, and it seems as though their playlist has expanded to some songs you might have heard only on Soul Street a couple of months ago, songs from the backend of their spectrum.

The one good thing about Soul Street being annexed by Soul Town: hearing familiar voices like Carol Ford and Tanya Simpson once again, as I did over the weekend.

The one bad thing about Soul Street being annexed by Soul Town: the combination of the music selection, plus the DJs with New York urban music connections, remind me too much of WRKS circa 1995-96. Been there, done that. I don't necessarily want to hear too much of that right now.

I haven't checked out the Message, but did see the jock lit. I find that to be a good thing. Bassed on what i've read of the format though, it seems as if They kept the XM name of The Message, while retaining the Serious style format/jocks.

For the Canadian on this thread: am in US but I have had XM since March. At the end of the dial
there's Canada 360 (Can. news) on 244, Quoi de Neuf? ("What's new?" same thing but in French)
on 245, and Calendar Sportif (Fr. language list of sports channels) on 246. A few other channels
earlier on are in French too I think

The Canadian content channels are, in general, complete throwaways to appease the CRTC. Canada 360 and Quoi de Neuf are utterly unlistenable due to the incredible compression artifacts (music like news sounders turn into complete mush) and complete lack of depth. The Emergency Alert Channel on 247 has a comparable amount of content, simply repeated over and over.

The music channels are simple throwaways to meet Canadian content requirements, but I suspect most Canadians outside of PQ don't bother - they can hear the same type of stuff on local radio anyway. The Canadian humor channel only muddied the waters of the XM comedy lineup - I doubt most people can figure out what's different about the XM comedy channels except over profanity.

Of course, post-merger, XM listeners are still stuck with mediocre Canadian content and no CBC.

Phillip, if anything I think XM's Cancon music channels have done more to generate US listenership than appease Canaidian listeners. I certainly enjoy hearing the music on the two French music channels. And of course the CBC seems to have a following on Sirius.
