XM coverage question

I just saw that the FCC is going to require XM-Sirius to put repeaters in Puerto Rico. I have a curious question about coverage in my area.

I'm about 1/2 mile from the beach in Fort Lauderdale, FL. In my house, I have NO problem picking up XM. But, on the beach, where there is NO obstruction at all, I cant pick up the signal.

Any idea why?
