XM Escape back to normal

Marlin Taylor is in a Yahoo group I belong to, and he made it clear that after the Hanukkah programming ends, Escape goes back to the way HE wants it to be, not what his bosses told him it should be.

What exactly is that? Less vocals? I really have no problem with the way Escape sounds now and actually think it has improved. How does Marlin have so much power over what is played? That's pretty cool actually that he can supposedly just thumb his nose at the bosses, if what he's saying is true.

I would be all for going back to more instrumentals. Beautiful Music is so hard to come by these days. I am grateful to the handful of outlets, mostly on satellite radio and on the web nowadays, that are still preserving this format that decades ago was so commonplace on FM dials across the country.

I've never been willing to spend the money but I certainly wouldn't pay for Escape the way it has sounded. There are plenty of places you can hear vocals, but I would want instrumentals only if I wanted to listen to them. I'd even accept Ray Conniff or Perry Como, but not some of what I've been reading about.

Gee, I thought "I" was a sticker about this format, but you guys are even worse than me. :p The amount of vocals are still far below what every B/EZ station I ever heard used to play. They were usually about 1 vocal to every 4 instrumentals. Escape is farther even below that. I think it's more like 1 vocal to every 6 instrumentals. Fine with me. Especially since the vocals are very pleasant and underplayed anywhere else. But if you guys want your 1 vocal to 10 instrumentals or whatever is used to be, I respect that. :)

I agree. They're just the right amount. A nice icing on the cake. I'd actually miss them if they went away totally. It's a balance. Let's not make the station soft AC oldies, but one in 6 or so, I see no problem whatsoever. Maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal if "Sirius Movin' Easy Channel 4" had stayed on-the-air after the merger. They stuck with all those soft, sensitive vocals from the 60s through the 80s. "The Heart" plays some of those, but soils it with 90s and 2000's nonsense. So either bring back "Movin Easy" or keep some of those "Movin' Easy" vocals on Escape.

For those of you who aren't already aware, DirecTV will be dropping the XM programming on 2/10 and replace it with Sonic Tap. Most of the music XM channels are being replaced with comparable channels from Sonic Tap. However, this is not the case with "Escape". Instead of replacing "Escape" with Sonic Tap's "beautiful instrumental" channel, DirecTV will replace channel 820 with the "contemporary instrumental" channel. Looking at Sonic Tap's playlist, the contemporary instrumental format appears to be nothing more than smooth jazz with some new age thrown in. The "beautiful instrumentals" channel isn't exactly the same as "Escape" since it is more than likely strictly instrumentals, but it's much closer in format than the "contemporary instrumentals" channel which will be offered. I hope this is just an error on DirecTV's end and "Escape" will be replaced with the "beautiful instrumentals" channel. I'll be emailing DirecTV to voice my opinion on it, nonetheless.

Yeah, I read about this in the Yahoo group.

A few years ago, I was in a mall that used DMX and they were playing beautiful instrumentals and it was like nothing I had ever heard.

If it hasn't changed since then, it'll make Escape look positively hip if they decide to use it. If they don't, that's just not right.

I emailed DirecTV and inquired why "Escape" wasn't being replaced with a comparable Sonic Tap channel and let them know I would prefer to receive the "beautiful instrumentals" channel as opposed to the "contemporary instrumentals" channel that is tentatively set to replace "Escape". i did receive a couple of emails back from them which actually addressed my concerns, instead of the usual "form letter", generic type of emails one usually receives. I would suggest that any of the DirecTV subscribers who want the "beautiful instrumentals" channel to replace "Escape" to email or call DirecTV and let them know. Might not be do any good, but if enough people email/call and complain, maybe they'll listen. It's worth a shot, anyhow. ;)

Escape is good here's a really good station that's here in Texas that plays the same kina stuff.

That's interesting you mentioned KNCT. I actually listened to it online yesterday for the first time and thought it sounded pretty good. There are also the Catholic stations in TX (KLUX, KHOY) which program beautiful music, too. I'm partial to "Escape", though. I wish DirecTV would reconsider and put the "beautiful instrumentals" channel on in place of "Escape". All of the other XM channels on DirecTV are being replaced with comparable Sonic Tap channels. "Escape" is the only one that I can see which is not. I'm still scratching my head, trying to determine how they came to the conclusion that Sonic Tap's "contemporary instrumentals" format is an equivalent replacement for "Escape". ::)
